What's the Buzz? 9/10/06
Here's the day to day list, including pitchers. If it's a pitcher, then he may or may not be making his next start. Always best to check it out daily to make sure: Mike Sweeney (oblique), Brian McCann (hand), Angel Berroa (complete inability to play even half decently), Anthony Reyes (tired arm), Roy Halladay (elbow), Jay Gibbons (muscle spasms), Manny Ramirez (knee), Coco Crisp (finger), Armando Benitez (arthritis), and Nate Robertson (ribs).
A little mor ethan day to day as you should note that Mariano Rivera will likely miss the entire upcoming scoring period. He should be benched until he's back in another week.
And now for the news...
It looks like some damage to the Phillies' bullpen as the final diagnosis on Arthur Rhodes is a strained tendon and sprained ligament in his throwing elbow. He's done for the year.
Congratulations to Francisco Rodriguez who became the youngest player to reach 100 career saves when he grabbed his 41st of the season. He is only 24. K-Rod also grabbed his 400th and 401st career strikeouts tonight. A no-brainer start in any league.
Another mini-milestone -- well, for me, not for him -- as Toronto's Adam Lind hit his first career home run. That's definitely one of the better aspects of the September call ups. Watching the kids' expressions when they do something like this. Lind is an OK play in AL only leagues, so long as he continues this hitting.
It was just a matter of time, and not really much of a fantasy impact at all, but the Devil Rays released Travis Lee today. Maybe he'll pick up somewhere else, but he's not likely to have any value. If it makes him feel any better, my wife still thinks he's handsome.
New career high for David Ortiz who hit his 48th HR of the season tonight. It's just good to see him back playing. Hope the heart's OK.
And the milestones keep on going as Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter extended his hit streak to a career high 20 games today. Love him or hate him, you've got to respect this guy's game. I'll cast my vote for him for MVP.
Check out manager Willie Randolph lighting a fire under Cliff Floyd's ass today. He told the ailing outfielder that if he expects to play in October, he better start playing now. Bottom line: We know the Achilles is still sore, but you need to suck it up. You're not reaping the October benefits without putting in a little action during the regular season. Maybe this will help as Floyd remains an injury prone disappointment for yet another season.
Keep an eye on the Royals' Esteban German. He's turned in to favorite of Buddy Bell's, and they will keep him playing everyday for the remainder of the season. He's got solid position versatility and could be a decent play in AL only leagues.
And finally, reports out of St. Louis say that Jason Isringhausen is questionable for the rest of the season. No word on his potential October status. The team is leaning towards Adam Wainwright to take over with Braden Looper remaining as a fallback option. Wainwright could be a decent pickup in NL only leagues for the rest of the way.
