What's the Buzz? 9/4/06
Just a quick Buzz today...hope you all had a great holiday weekend.
A few guys with some day to day issues here. Nothing substantial but enough to watch out for in leagues with daily moves allowed: Jermaine Dye (back), Kevin Youkilis (hand), Mariano Rivera (elbow), Cliff Floyd (Achilles tendon), Ken Griffey, Jr. (dislocated toe), Marcus Giles (acid reflux), Eliezer Alfonzo (wrist), Roger Clemens (groin), Coco Crisp (shoulder), Lyle Overbay (flu), Jeremy Hermida (ankle), Juan Encarnacion (hip flexor), Neifi Perez (thumb), and Travis Hafner (hand).
Perhaps a little more than day to day will be Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano who left today's game after 1 1/3 innings today with a sore back. The trainer says it sounds muscular, but Zambrano himself requested the MRI. That never sounds good. We'll know a little more on Tuesday.
And speaking of MRI's Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon's MRI on his shoulder was put off until Tuesday. I guess no one informed the Sox that Monday was a holiday. We should get results on his shoulder either Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.
Cardinals SS David Eckstein will not make the first half of the team's road trip with his strained oblique. His status for the rest of the week is in question as well, so it looks like you need to bench him if you can.
It looks like Chad Billingsley will miss his next start on Friday due to an oblique strain. The Dodgers haven't announced an official replacement, but I don't think it's anyone you're going to need to know about. Don't go dropping Billingsley just yet. He's had some real nice outings since his call up and while his WHIP is a bit high (1.54), his 3.02 ERA is nice. Remember, at the beginning if the year the big three coming were Billingsley, Jered Weaver and Cole Hamels, so he's got the ability to succeed.
Barry Bonds hit number 730 today....this goes a little beyond just heating up now. If he's healthy, he's hitting.
Congratulations to Texas OF Nelson Cruz for hitting 2 homers today, the first being an inside the parker and the second a 3 run blast. He has tremendous upside and should be a starting outfielder for the Rangers in 2007.
And finally, the Nationals have finally settled on center fielder as Frank Robinson announced that Nook Logan is being given the job for the remainder of the season. If that's the case, then Logan might be worth a pickup in NL only leagues if you need some cheap steals. He's always had great speed. It's getting on base that he has trouble with. Ryan Church owners walk away from another season of disappointment.
Catch you next time...
