What's the Buzz? 9/7/06

Well, my September Sleeper is looking more like a September Stinker as Scott Baker got smacked around for 5 earned runs in 5 innings tonight against the AL Central leading Tigers tonight. To add insult to injury, since the Twinkies are in the heat of a wild card race, they should probably go back to Francisco Liriano for the stretch and will also continue going with the hot arm, which currently looks like Carlos Silva. Baker should get atleast one more start, so I'm not jumping off the bandwagon just yet. Even if I'm the only one on it.

Now how about some news here on a short baseball day...

Some day to day guys to watch out for: Johnny Estrada (forearm), Scott Rolen (shoulder), Travis Hafner (hand), Joe Crede (back), Austin Kearns (back), David Eckstein (oblique), Mariano Rivera (elbow), and Ken Griffey, Jr. (toe). As always, check the morning news daily to see if they'll be playing.
I wish I could still list him as day to day, but apparently Jeremy Hermida's ankle problem is a stress fracture. On goes the protective boot, off he goes from your active lineup.
Also out indefinitely is Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon. His shoulder is still giving him problems, so he said he will only pitch again this season if the Sox are in contention. Looks like he's done for the year.
The Phillies welcomed back Tom Gordon today as he pitched a scoreless ninth tonight. No save for him though as Jeff Conine's 3 run shot put the game out of a save situation. Still, it was good to see Gordon back.
Mental note: Bench Brad Penny when he starts against the Mets. Nuff said.
Only 2 more homers before Jose Reyes becomes a 20-50 guy this year. Mets fans are never going to shut up now. C'mon boys...act like you've been there.
And finally, how about the career day for Pirates OF Chris Duffy? The center fielder went 4 for 4 with 2 HR and 2 SB. Too bad this offensive display didn't come back in April when he was handed the starting job right out of Spring Training. He would've made a nice little sleeper.

Catch you next time...
