What's the Buzz? 9/6/06

Congratulations to Marlins rookie pitcher Anibal Sanchez who threw a no hitter tonight against the Diamondbacks. He struck out 6 and walked 4. It was the leagues' first no-hitter since Randy Johnson's perfect game back in May 2004, apparently the longest no-hitter drought ever. Ironically, while this was all going on, the Big Unit was throwing no-hit ball into the seventh against the Royals. He didn't get the no-no, but it would have been nice to see. Back to the kid, though, Sanchez has been yet another bright spot on the Marlins pitching staff this year. Their whole rotation is going to be a hot commodity in next year's fantasy drafts.

Onto the other news...

Owners of Carl Crawford need to be wary as he was sat tonight and could spend some quality bench time more often. Mired in a 4 for 37 slump, he was just being given a night off. But word out of Tampa says that the tema is worried he's wearing down and could be rested more and more since they're not in any playoff contention. Nothing worse than contending for a fantasy championship and watching one of your guys sit for no other reason than that his team stinks every year. Keep your eyes on this in daily leagues.
Some more day to day names for you: Arthur Rhodes (shoulder), Travis Hafner (hand), Carlos Guillen (hamstring), Aaron Fultz (shoulder), Gabe Gross (hamstring), Laynce Nix (turf toe), Juan Rivera (hand), and Randy Winn (elbow). Check their status daily to see whether or not they're starting.
Nice to see Derrek Lee celebrate his 31st birthday with his seventh career grand slam to give the Cubbies the lead over the Pirates tonight. As a present to Lee, pitcher Rich Hill made the lead stand as he broke a Cubs' record for most strikeouts by a lefty with 11. The party in that clubhouse was fierce, I'm sure.
The Jeremy Sowers ride is over in Cleveland as he'll get one more start next week on Tuesday and be shut down for the year. Quite a ride as he was 6-0 with a 1.93 ERA in his last six starts. The team, whether fantasy geeks like it or not, is doing the right thing. He'll climb up the draft boards next spring.
Some closer action going on as Huston Street is expected back on the Friday while Reds closer Eddie Guardado is officially lost for the season with a torn ligament in his elbow. 35 years old and he's having Tommy John surgery because he think he can still pitch. Gotta admire the heart. We won't even remotely see him until the second half of the 2007 season.
And speaking of surgery...not that you expected to use him in September...Mark Mulder is having shoulder surgery next week to repair his rotator cuff. See you next spring Mark...wherever you end up.
Oliver Perez is looking a little better today than he has before huh? If he stays up and gets to pitch regularly with no pressure, he could be a strong asset down the stretch. And to think, he was a throw-in in the Xavier Nady/Roberto Hernandez deal. There's a lot of upside here.
An dfinally, congratualtions to Orioles 2B Brian Roberts for his first career multi-homer game as he banged 2 solo shots tonight. While he's been on a nice tear in the second half, he'll never put up numbers like he did in the first half of 2005.

Catch you next time...
