What's the Buzz? 9/5/06

Just a quickie tonight...if I miss anything more than a highlight or some useless September call-up's name, I'll catch it first thing in the morning. Or you are more than able to help out in the comments, as always.

In case you were wondering who wants the AL Cy Young Award this year the most, check out Johann Santana's pitching line tonight: 8 IP 2 H 1 BB 12 K. He grabbed his major league leading 17th win tonight.
Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said that it should be atleast another week before we see Mike Lieberthal back behind the plate. He's been down with back spasms again so it looks like Chris Coste will see the bulk of the time for now.
Congratulations to Indians 3B Andy Marte who hit his first career grand slam tonight. Maybe this is the spark he needs to get hot, because a .204 average ain't gonna cut it.
Diamondbacks SS Stephen Drew sat out again and is still day to day with a bruised hand. Damion Easley go the start tonight and he and Craig Counsell should switch on and off. Out of the three, the only one with potentially legit value down the stretch is Drew and he should only be out for maybe another game or two at the most. Forget the other two guys; no value to be found.
Also still day to day are Jermaine Dye (back), Juan Encarnacion (hip flexor), Chad Billingsley (oblique), Ken Griffey, Jr. (dislocated toe), Curt Schilling (strained lat muscle) and Chipper Jones (oblique). Always check their status before thinking about starting them this week. Well, Billingsley and Schilling are out anyway thsi week, so check for their status for next week's starts.
Bronson Arroyo threw his first career shutout tonight to prove my point with his selection to my 2006 All Bargain Team. He got his 12th win and he struck out 7 all on just three days rest.
While the MRI on Jonathan Papelbon's shoulder revealed no damage, the Red Sox are saying that he is expeiencing slippage in the shoulder joint. He'll rest now and will probably miss the next two weeks. If Boston continues its descension, he could just be shut down for the year.
Also possibly lost for the season is Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano. The MRI on his back revealed nothing significant, he is still in pain and has already said that he's not risking his career over whether or not to continue this year. He'll stop throwing altogether and then re-evaluate after the pain subsides. I'd look for help elsewhere.
The Eddie Guardado situation isn't looking too good as now he'll be injected with dye and have an MRI on his elbow on Wednesday. He still says he can pitch but it doesn't look like the Reds believe him. There is a chance we won't see him for the rest of the season.
And finally, Houston/Philadelphia and Atlanta/NY Mets both washed out today. Check when they're being made up, but chances are with the Phillies and the Braves having played 4 in 2 days this past weekend, I can't imagine the games won't wait until later.

Lots of new faces out there with call ups being done these past few days. Still no one that really stands out, so stick with your guys that are playing. Don't go fishing on the waiver wire for some no-name that has one good game at some point in the week unless he's replacing a guy of yours that's out for the year.

Catch you next time...
