What's the Buzz? 9/9/06

Jumping right it again today...

Why don't we just start with the day to day list here first: Macier Izturis (hamstring), Alex Rios (hand), Arthur Rhodes (elbow), Edgar Renteria (flu), Stephen Drew (groin), Kaz Matsui (thumb), Damien Miller (concussion), Chipper Jones (oblique), Adrian Beltre (personal), Joe Crede (back), Alex Rodriguez (stomach virus), Corey Patterson (shoulder), Johnny Estrada (forearm), Rod Barajas (back), Jason Isringhausen (hip), and Ramon Hernandez (ankle). As always, check their status in the morning before allowing them into your active lineup.

And now for the rest of the news...

Keep your eyes on Mets starter Pedro Martinez. He had another successful side session today and it looks like this is the week he gets activated. Probably around Friday or Saturday. If you make weekly roster moves, it should be safe to get him in for the upcoming scoring period.
It looks like the Yankees should have Hideki Matsui back in the lineup on Monday. He won't be taking over for Melky Cabrera in left, but rather he will take over for the ailing Jason Giambi at DH. Once Giambi comes back from his wrist problem, he should move back to first leaving Matsui where he is. The only ones suffering from this are Craig Wilson and Aaron Guiel.
A bittersweet day for Royals closer Joe Nelson as he pitched 4 outs for his first career major league win today. Unfortunately, while covering first for the final out in the 11th inning, he got his ankle stepped on by Alex Cora. He's now being called day to day so we have a couple of more opportunities this week to hear how Ambiorix Burgos blew another save.
Congratulations to Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia for hitting his first career major league HR today. He's not the best with the stick, but he's pretty slick with the glove. He is Boston's second baseman of the future.
Also congrats to Alfonso Soriano who just broke the Nationals/Expos franchise record for single season home runs with his 45th of the year tonight. The previous record was set by Vladimir Guerrero in 2000 when he hit 44.
The official word came out of Colorado today that Yorvit Torrealba is done for the season. Chris Ianetta will remain the team's primary backstop and warrant's a look in deep NL only leagues.
The Indians got some bad news when they learned today that Travis Hafner actually has a hairline fracture in his hand and will not return for the rest of the season. Just an awful mis-diagnosis from the earlier x-rays for fantasy owners. How do you miss a broken hand on your best hitter? Let's just hope you still have a chance to get Kevin Kouzmanoff. He'll remain the DH from here on in and has good value in AL only leagues. 2 for 4 with a homer and 3 RBI tonight...not a bad replacement for the next three weeks.
And finally, so much for my September Sleeper...officially now. The Twins are pulling Scott Baker from the rotation and replacing him with Matt Guerrier. It's really only for one start as apparently the team, in the heat of a pennant race, will bring back Francisco Liriano next week. Baker will get stuck with some mop up duty maybe if he's lucky. Sorry if you picked him up. If only he didn't screw up that last start against the Tigers. Oh well...

Catch you next time...
