What's the Buzz? 9/8/06

Just getting right to it today...

As if we had any doubt who the studs were in Cleveland, but even while losing, Grady Sizemore plays like a champ. In the loss to the White Sox tonight, Sizemore still went 3 for 4 with an RBI, 3 runs scored and 2 stolen bases. One more SB and he beats last season's total, but he's already surpassed his mark in HR and runs scored. 20-20 with 100+ RBI? What more could you want?
Sizemore's teammate, Travis Hafner had x-rays taken on his hand today, but they came back negative. Looks like it's just a deep bruise. He remains day to day.
Others on the day to day front include: Joe Crede (back), Kaz Matsui (thumb), Johnny Estrada (hand), Stephen Drew (flu), Armando Benitez (arthritis), Felipe Lopez (ankle), Mariano Rivera (elbow), Damien Miller (concussion), and Jason Giambi (wrist). Monitor their status before game times to see when they'll be back.
It's a little more than day to day as the Cardinals announced that closer Jason Isringhausen will miss atleast the next week due to a strained hip. It's something that has gotten gradually worse and the Cards don;t want to take any chances what with the playoffs coming and all. Izzy will be re-evaluated after resting for a few days. It looks like Tony LaRussa will go with a Braden Looper/Adam Wainwright committee for the time being.
And speaking of the Cards, anyone catch Anthony Reyes do his best Mark Mulder impersonation tonight? Yeesh...7 earned runs in 2 1/3 innings. I wouldn't worry here....he still looks like a good play in NL only leagues.
Welcome back Huston Street. The A's activated him today and watched as he pitched a scoreless ninth for his 30th save of the season. He looks like a safe bet for the remainder of the season.
Another returning closer was Tom Gordon tonight. It wasn't a scoreless ninth, but he did pick up the save in a game that featured the 55th and 56th HR for super stud Ryan Howard tonight. The Phillies are surging and could come out on top for the wild card this year. The race is gonna be a close on to watch.
Back to the A's here....it looks like Nick Swisher is fully over the whole mono thing. After a great first half, he completely fell apart in June and July, but came back strong in August. 8 HR and 28 RBI since Aug. 1. He cracked his 30th HR tonight and looks like a good play through the end of the year. Now if he could just do something about that .253 average for next season...
For those that grabbed Willy Aybar this season, hold onto him for now. Chipper Jones announced that if he's not ready to play by the end of the Braves' current homestand (Sept. 17th), he's done for the year. Aybar will obviously fill in for the duration of the year and has some value in NL only leagues still.
Anyone remember my call for super sleeper at catcher for 2006? Well if not, then good. He's hurt again. Colorado backstop Yorvit Torrealba left tonight's game with a shoulder injury (yes, the one that hurt all this year) and will have an MRI done to determine whether or not it's a season ender. Chris Ianetta should get the starts the rest of the way and may also have a little value in NL leagues.
Congratulations to Dodgers rookie Hong-Chih Kuo for nailing down his first career MLB victory tonight when he shut down the Mets for six scoreless innings tonight. 3 hits, 3 walks and 7 K's in the game and with Mark Hendrickson bumped from the roation, Kuo should probably get another start or two. He might be worth a look if the matchup is right. The Cubs next time out would be considered favorable.
Well, it doesn't look like the Devil Rays will be bringing back Scott Kazmir after all. He had a side session today that he, himself, cut short after feeling some discomfort in his throwing shoulder. Now I'm all for giving him a shot next year, but just like with every pitcher with injury problems, you need to be cautious when you're drafting him. Do the research next year and check his prognosis over the winter.
Astros pitcher Roger Clemens will miss his next start on Saturday due to a groin problem. It looks like Jason Hirsh will get the start in his place and may be worth a look again if he's going to get some regualr starts. No word yet on whether or not the Rocket's start will just be pushed back or if he's being skipped entirely.
Watch out for Mike Mussina again, as it was reported that his upcoming Sunday starts has been pushed back to Tuesday. Not because of his groin problem though, but because of arm stiffness. If the Yankees maintain their dominant lead over Boston, they may just skip him this week and let rookie Jeff Karstens take the start.
And speaking of the Red Sox, they officially released catcher/DH Javy Lopez today. Apparently he was released out of kindness. The Sox are giving him a chance to pick up elsewhere as he was doomed for major bench time with the return of Jason Varitek. Now the only question is...who wants him?
And finally, congrats to Mariners 1B Richie Sexson who set a franchise record with his 5th grand slam of the year. Th eprevious record of four was set by Edgar Martinez back in 2000.
Oh yeah....one more thing. Mariners 3B Adrian Beltre will be out indefinitely as he is staying at home to be with his wife who gave birth last Thursday. Maybe some time off with his new kid will be just what he needs to get himself out of the September doldrums from which he suffers.

Catch you next time...
