What's the Buzz? 5/7/06

Sidney Ponson's ressurrection hit a bump in the road today after he was removed after 3 scoreless innings due to elbow discomfort. He will be evaluated, x-rayed, and probably MRI'd on Monday. He will probably miss atleast one start which will alow the Cardinals to bring up Anthony Reyes to start in his place. Another option is Adam Wainwright, but I'd rather see Reyes step in and get a shot.
Since returning fro the DL, Rockies 1B Todd Helton is 4 for 11 and mashed a huge 3 run shot today. It is safe to say that you should get him back in your lineup for this week.
As expected, Luis Matos has been getting a good amount of playing time since returning from the DL; all at the expense of Corey Patterson. Told ya!!!
Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit, fresh from a DL stint, sat today due to aggravating his hamstring again. He is day to day, but will see his stock slip even more with every tweak and twinge he feels.
Brewers "ace" Ben Sheets was a last minute scratch from today's game with stiffness in the front of his shoulder. This could be a major concern again and he may go on the DL this week. Keep a close eye on this if you have him.
The A's placed OF Milton Bradley on the DL retroactive to April 27th. They may not need to bring another OF up. Jason Kendall will probably witdraw his appeal to his suspension allowing the team to bring up another catcher. When the suspension is up, Bradley should be able to return.
The Mets put SP Victor Zambrano on the 60 day DL today. He has a torn flexor tendon and will undergo season ending surgery this week. Maybe no one called "no backsies" and the Mets will be able to get Scott Kazmir back from the D-Rays. Whoops!!
Freddy Sanchez will still get to play third for the Pirates for atleast another 10 days as the Pirates put Joe Randa on the 15 day DL retroactive to May 2. Randa has a stress fracture in his foot that has been slow to heal.
Also, rumors out of Pittsburgh have Oliver Perez getting sent down to the minors to try and "regain his command". He has options, so this is a very likely possibility.
The Astros put Chris Burke on the 15 day Dl with a shoulder problem that will require an MRI to look for damage in the labrum. Orlando Palmiero becomes the new 4th outfielder and the 'stros will bring up Joe McEwing to act as a reserve infielder.
More on the closing front in Tampa as manager Joe Maddon said he will give Tyler Walker every opportunity to come out as the Rays closer. Apparently, the committee isn't working. Walker isn't worth much unless he becomes the full time guy and after the way he's pitched this year, that could be some time.
There is a very good chance that Angels OF Darin Erstad could end up on the DL with his injured right ankle. He apparently suffered a setback while testing the ankle and there's also talk about him having surgery to shave down a couple of bone spurs.
It looks like Kerry Wood could be back pitching fo rthe Cubs on May 17th. He struck out 12 in 5 scoreless innings in a single A rehab start today and will probably get one more minor league outing before coming back.
Barry Bonds is just one homer shy from tying Babe Ruth as he hit his 713th today against the Phillies. On a nationally televised ESPN game, Bonds was shown walking out to left staring at a ridiculously large and long sign that read "Babe Ruth did it with hot dogs and beer, Hank Aaron did it with class". It's almost getting to the point where I feel sorry for the guy. I bet his kids get beat up at school a lot.

That's all I got for you today...

Catch you next time...
