What's the Buzz? 5/4/06

Rumors out of Tampa have Dan Miceli going on the DL with soreness in his throwing shoulder. However, the closer situation will remain a three-headed monster as now rookie Chad Orvella will see save opportunities along with Tyler Walker and Shawn Camp. Orvella was probably dropped in most leagues, so maybe this is an opportunity to pick him back up. Someone needs to become the closer on this team.
The Devil Rays are also making room on the roster for Aubrey Huff and Julio Lugo as they optioned down both Nick Green and Sean Burroughs. Time's running out to trade Ty Wigginton.
Congratulations to Randy Johnson as he became the 3rd pitcher to reach 4,400 career strikeouts by striking out the aforementioned super-stud Nick Green. The Big Unit is just 101 K's behind Roger Clemens for 2nd on the all time list. Should be an interesting race this season when the Rocket comes back.
Dodgers catcher Dioner Navarro and 3B Bill Mueller are both being considered day to day as both left today's game early. Navarro has a bruised wrist, but X-Rays will be taken Friday and Mueller has knee soreness. More information will follow tomorrow, but if you have replacements for them, use them.
Also leaving early today was Texas OF Brad Whifferson. Concussion from hitting the wall making a play. Maybe it'll knock some sense into this guy and learn how to take a freakin' pitch. Did you know this guy strikes out 40% of the time? 40%!!!
Just to toot my horn a little here.....I was pretty high on Ryan Howard all spring and talked him up whenever I could. Howard is currently hitting .323 with 6 HR and 18 RBI. Tip of the iceberg folks, tip of the iceberg.
Speaking of the Phillies, do you know why Gavin Floyd and Ryan Madson are sweating so much? Because Cole Hamels is coming...
The Pirates will be without 3B Joe Randa for a little longer than expected as he revealed that his MRI showed a stress fracture in his foot. The foot is in a boot right now and he will be re-evaluated in a few days.
Also on the injury front, Royals OF Reggie Sanders is day to day with hamstring tightness.
It just might be time to fully cut bait with White Sox OF Brian Anderson. He's just not producing and now he's been sat the past 2 games with Ross Gload and Rob Mackowiak getting the playing time.
Rich Aurilia, who had been playing some first base in Cincy, has gone on the 15 day DL. Jerry Narron is going to have some decisions to make about who's playing where, especially if/when Ken Griffey, Jr. comes back. Hopefully he'll do the right thing and try and get Chris Denorfia some at bats.
And finally, the Mariners are going to try the Texas Rangers approach to closers as manager Mike Hargrove said they were removing Eddie Guardado from the closer's role for the time being and get him back on track through some less pressured relief outings. J. J. Putz becomes the favorite for saves now, but look for Guardado to reclaim the job later on. Rafael Soriano could fall into the mix as well. Don't get too down on it if you have Everyday Eddie. It's worked for Francisco Cordero so far and he looks close to getting back his job fairly soon.

Catch you next time...
