What's the Buzz? 5/2/06
Catcher controversy in Pittsburgh!!! Ronny Paulino started today for the 6th time in the last 7 games rendering Humberto Cota useless. But what happens when Ryan Doumit is activated from the DL this week? Well, they're going to carry 3 catchers. Great, right (insert sarcastic eye roll)? Apparently they are sending Mike Edwards down to AAA and Doumit will probably play a little more 1B and OF. Paulino looks like the guy who will retain the best fantasy value.
Mini-brawl between the A's and Angels today as Jason Kendall charged the mound to go after John Lackey. There was an inside pitch that Kendall didn't try to move away from (although it didn't hit him) and he and Lackey exchanged some heated words and subsequently a fight. Lackey may have won on the scorecards, but Kendall got the crowd roaring when he took his opponent down to the ground. Definite suspension for Kendall; possible suspension for Lackey.
It didn't take long for the Tony Womack experiment to fail in Cincinnati. He was officially released today after the Reds were unable to trade him. He may catch on somewhere else, but as nothing more than bench help.
If you're waiting on Ken Griffey, Jr. to return to your lineup, it'll have to wait until this weekend. He says he doesn't want to come back until he's 100%.
Also for the Reds, Cody Ross went on the 15 day DL and the team called up Chris Denorfia to take his place. If he were to get some decent playing time, Denorfia might be worth a look. However, I don't think we're going to see much of him unless an injury hits the outfield again.
After re-aggravating his calf injury, White Sox OF Jermaine Dye left today's game and may end up on the DL after all. We'll know more in the next day or so, but reserve him for now.
So if Tampa Bay's Shawn Camp were managing the team, he would have Tyler Walker be the closer for the Rays. He puts himself and Dan Miceli as setup men. Real life manager Joe Maddon had nothing to say on the matter...the three headed monster still lurks near the everglades.
Marlins rookie OF Jeremy Hermida was removed from his rehab game due to soreness in his leg and will most likely not be activated this week. He will be re-evaluated during the week.
Uh oh...here it comes...it was just a matter of time. The Cubs believe that Carlos Zambrano is experiencing dead arm as a result of pitching in the World Baseball Classic back in March. It's bad enough that Dusty Baker overworks Zambrano during the season, but the early March "game action" isn't going to help either; too many innings. He could be one to trade as he is a strong candidate for an arm injury this season.
Barry Bonds is just 2 away from the Babe as he hit his 712th HR today.
Rockies' 1B Todd Helton will return Friday from the DL as scheduled. They'll probably just put Eli Marrero on in his place.
Keep your eyes on Ben Sheets. He got rocked tonight lasting only 2 1/3 innings and now there's specualtion that he is either experiencing dead arm or even worse, shoulder problems again.
Despite notching his 3rd save and refusing to give up a run in 2 weeks, Akinori Otsuka will probably not remain the closer for Texas. Not sure I understand why....Francisco Cordero has been terrible this year, but will still get another opportunity.
The return of the Meathook is coming. Tigers DH/1B Dmitri Young should return this weekend which means buh-bye to Marcus Thames for a little while.
The Diamondbacks put P Russ Ortiz on the 15 day DL today retroactive to April 23rd. Maybe it'll help him to throw a few rehab starts, but he was already dumped into the pen and replaced with Juan Cruz who should be worth a look.
An dfinally, with a bulging cervical disc, Royals 1B Mike Sweeney will go on the DL and apparently will miss more than a few weeks. The team called up Justin Huber who will act as the team's primary DH. Huber is definitely worth a look, especially with Sweeney's injury history.
