What's the Buzz? 5/1/06
We can start today with a trade that really only makes sense in Red Sox Nation as the Sox dealt catcher Josh Bard, minor league pitcher Cla Meredith and either a player to be named or cash to the Padres to re-acquire catcher Doug Mirabelli. Smart move for the Sox actually as Wakefield and Mirabelli have a long standing relationship. This will definitely limit the number of passed balls and will surely help Wakefield's comfort on the mound. Bard will backup Mike Piazza in San Diego while Meredith should go down to the minors.
In the game, Wakefield and Mirabelli fell back in to form and held the Yankees to 3 runs in 7 innings, but failed to get the decision. Ironically, the game was decided on a 3 run homer by David Ortiz off of new Yankees lefty Mike Myers, whom they lured from the Sox in the offseason. Round 1 goes to Boston.
Let the Roger Clemens sweepstakes begin!!! The Astros were able to re-start negotiations with the Rocket at midnight and they hope to bring him back this season as they defend their NL title. The Yankees and red Sox also loom as potential suitors.
Both Ryan Church and Ryan Zimmerman are expected back to the Nationals' lineup by mid week. Church has been out with the flu and Zimmerman left the team to attend his grandmother's funeral.
Met smanager Willie Randolph says that the 2B job in New York is Kaz Matsui's to lose. Once Anderson Hernandez comes off the DL , he will probably be optioned to AAA.
Phillies starter Ryan Madson was roughed up again tonight giving up 5 ER in 5 1/3 innings. You know what that means? Cole Hamels baby!!! He's an outstanding young lefty who struck out 14 in 7 innings last week in his AAA debut. The team may call him up if they bump Madson from the rotation and leave Ryan Franklin in the pen. Watch this one closely as Hamels could be a great pick up.
Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo continues to pitch well going 5-0 today. Starting to look like a much better deal for the Reds who gave up Wily Mo Pena for him to the Red Sox. You've got to love when a guy changes leagues so close to the start of the season. Teams don't have great scouting reports and he usually produces very well. It also makes him a sell high candidate. Sometimes the second time around the league isn't so kind.
The Brewers Tomo Ohka left tonight's start with a right rotator cuff strain. He may end up on the DL with either Ben Hendrickson or possible callup Dana Eveland taking his spot in the rotation. Don't bother.
Word out of Chicago is that OF Jermaine Dye may be back for Tuesday's game after he left yesterday's with a strained calf.
a little something for my friend, Keith...
BONDERMAN!!!!
The Orioles will have another OF Tuesday when Luis Matos comes off the DL. Either Nick Markakis or Luis Terrero will be sent down to make room. Hopefully it's the latter. Markakis has much better upside; he just needs to bring his average up.
Lastly, the A's have placed Esteban Loaiza on the 15 day DL with a strained trapezius muscle. They needed to do something with him . He's been awful so far. Brad Halsey will get the start in his place.
