What's the Buzz? 5/5/06

With the return of Ken Griffey, Jr. looming, Ryan Freel better start elevating his game or he's going to be warming the bench while Brandon Phillips sees all the action at second base. Freel is only hitting .247 right now.
Giants OF Moises Alou is expected to go on the disabled list with a sprained ankle. Look for Steve Finley to start getting some regular playing time.
Phillies starter Gavin Floyd only gave up 3 runs in six innings tonight. Maybe he's tryin gto make a case for himself, but he needs to be more consistent. Otherwise...Cole Hamels is coming...
Sitting for his third straight game, Padres 1B Adrian Gonzalez could find himself losing a lot more playing time to Mark Bellhorn if he doesn't pick it up soon.
The Dodgers placed catcher Dioner Navarro on the DL with a deep bone bruise in his wrist. The X-rays didn't reveal any breaks or fractures, so he should be right back when his 15 days are up.
The MRI on Dodgers 3B Bill Mueller revealed no damge to the knee, so he will just be out for a few days until the soreness goes away. Reserve him in any daily leagues this weekend.
Royals P Joe Mays has officially been removed from the rotation and has been asked to accept a demotion to AAA. No word on who will take his place, but Mike Wood looks like a strong possibility.
Also for the Royals, 3B Mark Teahen was shipped out to the minors today opening up the door for Esteban German once again. The Royals won't rush prospect Alex Gordon, so the job looks to belong solely to German for now.
Braves starter Horacio Ramirez could return from the DL at the end of the month. He will have the first of 3 rehab starts on Sunday and will be re-evaluated then. It looks like he could replace Jorge Sosa in the rotation.
A's catcher Jason Kendall was fined and suspended for 4 games for charging the mound and getting thrown around by John Lackey. He will appeal the suspension, but will probably drop it soon so he can resume playing ASAP.
The oft-injured Mike Lieberthal was placed on the 15 day DL with a bruised knee. Sal Fasano and Carlos Ruiz will assume catching responsibilities in Philly for the next 2 weeks.
The Tigers have activated DH Dmitri Young from the disabled list and sent down Alex Gomez to make room on the roster. Maybe this will add some punch to the lineup and help guys like Chris Shelton resume their hitting ways.
As expected, the Devil Rays activated SS Julio Lugo and 3B Aubrey Huff from the DL today and place RP Dan Miceli on it. Ty Wigginton will shift over to second until Jorge Cantu comes back and then it's off to RF until Rocco Baldelli returns. After that it's "sofa city", sweetheart.
The Rockies activated 1B Todd Helton from the DL today pushing Eli Marrero back to the bench. Helton could be a great "buy low" candidate right now.
And finally, to stick with the injuries, the Orioles placed C/DH Javy Lopez on the DL today and activated OF Luis Matos. Jeff Conine and Kevin Millar will assume DH duties while Matos will get involved in the crowded OF mix.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!!!

Catch you next time...
