What's the Buzz? 8/17/06
Not that it has any kind of fantasy impact this season, but did anyone else see Yankees prospect Tyler Clippard throw a no-hitter for AA-Trenton tonight? He had 9 strikeouts and walked four in his victory over Harrisburg. All the focus has been on Phillip Hughes that it has allowed Clippard to relax and enjoy a season of 10 wins, a 3.54 ERA, a 1.051 WHIP and 155 K's in 149 1/3 innings. Solid numbers across the board. He's 21 years old and listed as the Yankees #2 pitching prospect, so we can maybe expect him in a year or two.
And now the news...
So MLB handed out suspension today for the Angels/Rangers basebrawl extravaganza. For the Angels, manager Mike Scioscia received 3 games while Adam Kennedy, Brendan Donnelly and Kevin Gregg each received 4 games. Kennedy and Gregg began serving immediately so you'll want to put them on the bench in daily leagues. No word on when Donnelly will serve his. For the Rangers, manager Buck Showalter received 4 games while Vicente Padilla got 5 and Scott Feldman received 6. Padilla will serve immediately and Feldman should serve his shortly thereafter. Some got more than they should and some got less. It pretty much balances out. It's not like this is going to deter them from doing it next time but you have to do something.
For all of you daily league people, the Mariners activated 1B Richie Sexson from the bereavement list today, so he should be "fine" for you to re-activate. By "fine" I mean if you can eat that batting average. Yuck!
So Matt Garza and Jason Hirsh looked better today than they did in their first starts of the season. If either is still available and you have the bench space, you might think about grabbing one of them. Even though Hirsh got the better end tonight and walked away with his first win, I still like Garza better for the long haul.
Hmmm. Carl Crawford. 6 stolen bases in his last 2 games. Not too shabby. Good to see him earning that first round draft selection.
Speaking of the Devil Rays, 3B B.J. Upton is being called day to day with a shoulder strain he suffered swinging at a pitch tonight. He was removed after the at bat and will likely miss a game or two. Maybe the rest will wake him up and he'll start hitting and stealing bases like he's supposed to do.
Also, it goes from bad to worse for D-Rays' DH Jonny Gomes. He started of super hot and has continued to suck every month since April. Now they're talking season ending shoulder surgery. If you're still going with him, then not only is batting average a huge problem for you, but so is the hole that is soon to be in your outfield.
And lastly in Tampa, the closer-go-round might be making another switch as Brian Meadows has now been beaten up in consecutive outings. It appeared that they were just waiting for this while Seth McClung lurked in the wings. If now is the time for the switch, then McClung might be worth a look.
There's no official word yet, but there stands a possibility of the Cardinals having Jim Edmonds back in the lineup on Friday against the Cubs. It's a day to day thing with post-concussion syndrome, but he had an encouraging workout today and seemed ready to play. While this weekend may still be in question, it looks like he should be ready to go for the next scoring period.
Consider Mets 2B Jose Valentin day to day after he left today's game with tightness in his hamstring. If he misses any time, Chris Woodward will fill in, but manager Willie Randolph didn't seem too concerned. Willie knows that he wants a healthy team to go into the playoffs, so expect the somewhat "newbish" manager to be a little cautious. No different than what Ozzie Guillen did last year.
And finally, Saturday's start for Astros starter Roy Oswalt still may be in jeapordy. He had a workout today, but nothing was reported on his wrist, which he took a line drive off of in his last outing. If he can't go, Dave Borkowki will take his spot. Wait for the results in the next day or two, but if he misses this weekend and doesn't go on the DL, then he could be a nice 2 start option for next week.
Catch you next time...
