What's the Buzz? 8/16/06
So Toronto continues to deal off players today (the Scott Schoeneweis trade was reported earlier) as they have sent 1B/3B Eric Hinske to the Red Sox in exchange for a prosepect to be named. Looking at it through real baseball eyes, it gives the Sox an additional option at the corners and gives them better depth in the outfield than say, Gabe Kapler. Through fantasy baseball eyes it just says that if you own Kevin Youkilis or Mike Lowell, you just got screwed. Hinske will get a few starts per week at their expense, so you're going to have to start watching the matchups on a regular basis. On top of that, there are reports that the Sox also signed 1B Carlos Pena to a minor league contract, shortly after he was released by the Yankees. If he shows he can hit, he could be called up in September and create an even worse logjam.
If you own either Lowell or Youkilis, my suggestion is you start checking the waiver wire for corner guys. If there's a guy available with decent (for this time of year) numbers and plays everyday, he'll probably be a better option than any of these guys right now.
Onto the news...
If you're looking for relief help, then keep an eye on Octavio Dotel. He was activated from the DL today and the Yankees immediately got him into a game tonight. He gave up one hit, one walk and recorded one out. Not the most stellar return, but he didn't give up any runs. He should only get better with more action and could be a valuable commodity down the stretch for your team.
All of you Curtis Granderson owners should take notice of the fact that he could find his way into a straight platoon with Brent Clevlen, who is hittin .412 with 3 HR and 4 RBI since his call up. Clevlen started in place of Granderson tonight because he [Grandy] is only hitting .205 against lefties. The Tigers mean business here and if you're not hitting, you're not playing. Just ask Chris Shelton. If Granderson doesn't watch it, he could be finding himself on the bench more than he would like.
The Angels/Rangers series got a little out of hand tonight as Kevin Gregg, Brendan Donnelly, Adam Kennedy and Scott Feldman were all tossed tonight in a series of hit batmen and mound charging. The Angels were retaliating for Vicente Padilla's outing yesterday when he hit two guys and almost a third while he was being drubbed for 6 runs in 3 2/3 innings. Tomorrow's game should be interesting, but be careful if you own any of these guys. Suspensions are definitely a possibility.
Not that he should have been active for you, but you can drop Joel Pineiro as the Mariners are dropping him from the rotation. Reliever Jake Woods will get the opportunity to claim the vacated spot, but he doesn't look good for the long haul.
Cardinals OF Jim Edmonds is day to day with post-concussion syndrome. He left yesterday's game with dizziness and had an MRI today which showed normal brain function. It looks like he just needs a few days off, but be careful. We've already gone through this with Mike Matheny. He should be reserved in all leagues right now.
The Rangers put Brad Whifferson (I mean, Wilkerson...sort of) on the DL today as he is having season ending shoulder surger this week. ::shakes head in disgust:: So many people had him down for a great sleeper pick with his move to Texas, including myself. What a bust! I'd almost rather have Angel Berroa on my team.
So the Mets put Pedro Martinez on the DL today, but according to manager Willie Randolph, the move was more of a precaution. For the fantasy players this sucks, but you have to admit that it's the right decision for the team right now. The last thing you want is for your ace to be out for the playoffs.
And finally, it looks like Astros manager Phil Garner has had enough of Brad Lidge's blown saves as it only took him four months to decide that he is now going to a closer by committee situation. It looks like Dan Wheeler and possibly Chad Qualls will get some save opportunities.
