What's the Buzz? 8/10/06
Before I get to the news, I just want to announce the beginning of another weekly addition to the blog that will start this weekend. It's going to be called "Power Performers" and will highlight the top hitter and top pitcher for each league. We'll also throw in a few honorable mentions to keep you posted on who's been hot as of late -- it should help you out with waiver pickups and, if you still have time, trades. Thanks again for joining us this year. I hope it's been a successful one for you.
Now for the news...
Well, he may not be a "Power Performer" this week, but you have to take your hat off to Angels starter Ervin Santana. Did you see him get hit on the knee with that line drive in the first inning (I'll link the video as soon as I get it)? Ugly just doesn't even describe it. But after all that he still told Mike Scioscia that he wanted to stay in to pitch. Now that's being a gamer. Obviously Scioscia did not let him and sent him out immediately for x-rays, which, fortunately, came back negative. He's being called day to day and will be re-evaluated in the next day or so to see if he needs to miss a start. My guess is they should hold him out for one, but will be fine for the rest of the season.
Luis Matos moves on yet again, as the Nationals released him today. He'll probably find some bench work somewhere and Seattle seems a likely destination. Regardless though, he's not doing much of anything to warrant being on your fantasy team.
More problems for Rondell White as his hamstring aches continue to plague him. He'll probably go back on the DL when the Twins activate Lew Ford on Friday. Josh Rabe and Jason Tyner will continue to see some playing time at DH and left field, atleast until Jason Kubel is back at 100%. Very minimal value in AL only leagues...for any of these guys.
And if things weren't bad enough for the Twins with injuries this year, how about Francisco Liriano? An MRI showed that he has a mild chronic strain of his ulnar collateral ligament, and a clinical exam revealed weakness and stiffness in his shoulder that is causing the soreness in his forearm near his elbow. Arm problems have always been a concern for him and now his staus for the rest of the year is up in the air. Don't expect the Twins to push him into coming back too early, regardless of where they sit in the wild card standings.
Indians 2B Jason Inglett is day to day after leaving today's game with a sprained foot. He'll have some tests done on Friday to determine how long he could be out but for now it looks like Hector Luna should be seeing some regular playing time in the next few games. Aaron Boone, who made an appearance at second tonight could also see a little action. Something tells me, if I had to start one of them, Luna would be the guy.
It's happening all over again for Padres SS Khalil Greene. He's now missed 6 straight games with his sprained middle finger and is going to be seeing a hand specialist on Friday. A stint on the DL seems very likely.
And finally, as expected, the Reds optioned Chris Denorfia to the minors today to make room for Todd Hollandsworth. Tough break being a young kid off to a slow start in a pennant race, but I'm sure we'll be hearing from him again, either in September when rosters expand or Spring Training 2007. Keep your eye on him.
Personal satisfaction moment of the day: Kansas City Royals sweep the Boston Red Sox!!!!!
Catch you next time...
