Power Performers
If it's all about going with the hot bat or the hot arm, then these guys definitely make the grade. Here's a look at the top performers this past week, and I'm sure that some of them are available on your waiver wire. The batting lines go: AVG-R-HR-RBI-SB
AL Hitters:
1. Mark DeRosa, IF/OF Tex : .433-8-4-15-0 The biggest bat in Texas has eligibility all over the place and will continue to see regular playing time.
2. Vladimir Guerrero, OF Ana: .346-6-3-3-3 Always a safe bet this time of year and the steals are a huge plus. Too bad all those dingers were solo shots.
3. Gary Matthews, Jr., OF Tex: .321-10-3-9-0 He just keeps on going this year and hasn't shown any sign of slowing back down.
4. Doug Mirabelli, C Bos: .400-3-3-5-0 Making the most of his time while assuming a primary role. Should continue to put up solid numbers until Varitek returns.
5. Wily Mo Pena, OF Bos: .375-7-3-9-0 A hot bat will certainly keep him playing even after Trot Nixon returns, even if it's at the expense of Coco Crisp in center.
Honorable Mention: Brian Roberts, Bobby Abreu, Lyle Overbay
AL Pitchers:
1. Esteban Loaiza, SP Oak: 2 Wins-9 K- 3.07 ERA- 1.091 WHIP Streaky starter who has shown some flashes of ability this year. Really depends on the matchup.
2. Brad Radke, SP Min: 2 W-5 K-1.29 ERA-1.143 WHIP Up and down this season but traditionally a solid ratios guy. Some vintage performances still left.
3. Francisco Rodriguez, RP Ana: 4 Saves-5 K-0.00 ERA-0.545 WHIP What more can you say about one of the most dominant closers these days? K-Rod is solid.
4. A.J. Burnett, SP Tor: 1 W-10 K-1.29 ERA-1.143 WHIP When healthy he can be a lights out strikeout machine...when healthy.
5. Bobby Jenks, RP ChiW: 3 S-6 K-0.00 ERA-0.750 Anyone remember when he was in Ozzie's doghouse this spring. No danger of losing the job, is there?
Honorable Mention: Huston Street, Freddy Garcia, C.C. Sabathia
NL Hitters:
1. Edwin Encarnacion, 3B Cin: .440-7-4-8-1 Has returned to the power hitting form we witnessed before his injury. Platooning no more.
2. Ryan Howard, 1B Phi: .400-5-3-7-0 Just a beast. Will probably be highlighted here every week for the rest of the season.
3. Hanley Ramirez, SS Fla: .280-4-0-1-4 Even after the bump down in the order, he continues to show he's a serious stolen base threat.
4. Garrett Atkins, 3B Col: .250-6-3-8-0 The average has taken a dip but the move to the 3 hole in the order means more power.
5. Jimmy Rollins, SS Phi: .387-7-3-9-1 Just one of those weeks where he shows you the power to blend with his speed.
Honorable Mention: Dan Uggla, Chris Duncan, Jose Reyes
NL Pitchers:
1. Takashi Saito, RP L.A.: 2 Wins-2 Saves-2.08 ERA-0.923 WHIP As the Dodgers shoot for the division they'll continue to play close games. This guy will be involved a lot down the stretch.
2. Brad Penny, SP L.A.: 2 W-11 K-3.21 ERA-0.857 WHIP Has been a beacon of consistency for the club this year and the talent is shining.
3. Ricky Nolasco, SP Fla: 2 W-7 K-3.29 ERA-0.878 WHIP Quietly having a solid rookie campaign. A little up and down, so check the matchups.
4. Billy Wagner, RP NYM: 4 S-6 K-2.25 ERA-1.250 WHIP The Mets continue to roll through the NL and this guy just keeps closing 'em out.
5. Jason Schmidt, SP SF: 1 W-11 K-1.84 ERA-1.023 WHIP Having a fantastic free agent season. His record would be much better if he had the run support.
Honorable Mention: Joe Borowski, Tim Hudson, Francisco Cordero
