What's the Buzz? 8/11/06

Wow!!! So some disappointment today huh? A little while ago I asked if Matt Garza was that good and damned if I didn't get my answer tonight. 7 earned in 2 2/3 innings??? I could get that from Jose Lima. What's wrong with Matt Garza, I should've been asking. Kidding actually. I'm still a big fan of his and I definitely think he will put it together on the major league level. Look...big expectations for him tonight. With Francisco Liriano down, the Twins and their fans had a lot riding on Garza's start tonight. Even the rookie admitted to being a little over-excited when he was trying to play it cool. His velocity was there and his fast ball was solid. Problem was, he couldn't hit with his curveball or his slider. And if you can't mix it up, you're going to get pounded. This is, after all, the major leagues. If the Twins stick with him, he'll start to show you what the hype is all about. He's going to be big in 2007 and that Minnesota rotation is going to be scary.

As for the news...

A little change in San Francisco's rotation as manager Felipe Alou pulled Jamey Wright from starting duties and is replacing him with Brad Hennessey. A risky move, but Hennessey is pitching well as of late. He has moderate strikeout potential and may be useful down the stretch in deeper NL only leagues.
I suppose Khalil Greene isn't going on the DL with his sprained middle finger after all. He was in the lineup tonight but went 0-3. It's an injury that has and will hamper him for the rest of the season. I'd look elswhere if you need middle infield help.
The Diamondbacks put OF Jeff DaVannon on the DL, retro to August 6, with a sprained ankle. It looks like we could get more of a regular look at Carlos Quentin as he should see a few starts in center field now. It's a great audition for him, but unfortuantely it could also raise the price on him for next year.
Looks like the Cardinals will be starting Scott Spiezio at third for the whole weekend. Apparently Scott Rolen's back spasms are still bothering him and will need to take the next few games off. If you're in a daily move league you should bench him. He should be fine for next week's scoring period though.
As expected, the Braves put pitcher Horacio Ramirez on the DL with a partially torn ligament in his middle finger. Now I won't say he's done for the year, but when they throw the "indefinitiely" tag on you for how long you'll be out for, you may as well call it a year. Kevin Barry will be called up to take his spot in the rotation, but I wouldn't use him if I were you.
It looks like it's a one way ticket to Pine City for Brewers OF Geoff Jenkins as manager Ned Yost has decided to sit him in favor of using Gabe Gross and Corey Hart. It may just be a motivational thing for Jenkins as I don't see them just using him for pinch hitting the rest of the year, but for now his value is garbage. Gross and Hart will platoon too much to do anything big for your team, but if you don't have anyone to replace Jenkins with, Gross would be my choice.
And finally, with the return of Mike Sweeney and a healthy Reggie Sanders, the Royals no longer needed to keep Shane Costa around. He was sent down to Triple-A again, but we still may see him in September. Another audition for 2007 if you will.
Short news day today for me...

Catch you next time...
