What's the Buzz? 8/14/06

You know...just when you think Father Time has caught up with someone and the latter years of their career is marred with injury...BAM!!!! Out pops Chipper Jones. How many times have we seen him have a ridiculous week after being activated from the DL? Just unreal sometimes. For the record, he was activated on Sunday and today he finished 4-5 with 3 HR and 5 RBI. If you chose not to activate him this week...oops!!!

Now onto the news...

The Phillies are going to be without closer Tom Gordon for a few days as he rests his shoulder. He complained of soreness today which could be the reason behind the blown saves in the last 2 outings. He'll have an MRI done, but manager Charlie Manuel seems to think that it's nothing a few days of rest won't fix. We'll wait for results before speculating on who would take over, but if a fill in is needed, a committe will probably be the answer.
Mets ace Pedro Martinez said he felt a twinge in his calf during his pasting tonight and will have tests run on his leg on Tuesday. Another wait and see here. Either he's making an excuse for a bad outing or he's really hurt and could miss his next start. Like I said, wait and see.
Pirates SS Jack Wilson is day to day after leaving today's game with a bruised hand, but he did already declare himself ready to go on Tuesday. We'll let him sleep on it and see if there's swelling, but it doesn't appear to be anything serious.
Also for the Pirates, OF Nate McLouth went on the DL with a sprained ankle so it looks like Jose Bautista and Jeromy Burnitz will platoon right field while Chris Duffy gets the full time job in center. This should be a good test for Duffy who blew this opportunity already once this season. If he can hold down the job he could be a decent pickup in NL only leagues as he should also hit leadoff. But be careful. If he screws the pooch again, recent call-up Rajai Davis could jump into the mix.
Bobby Crosby will not be returning to the A's lineup on Tuesday, his target date for return. The team won't activate him until he can run through all of his drills while his back remains pain free and it looks like it's still going to be a few days extra.
It looks like Rockies OF Matt Holliday is day to day with a bruised wrist. He left tonight's game after getting plunked by a Claudio Vargas pitch. If he needs to miss any time, Corey Sullivan should see a start or two.
The Giants swapped out utility infielders as they sent down Jose Vizcaino and brought back up Kevin Frandsen. No real value here unless someon ein the infield gets hurt.
And finally, the countdown begins on the next great pitching prospect as the Reds Homer Bailey continues to tear up Double-A ball since his promotion. Today it was 11 K's in 5 innings and he's now 5-0. He won't be up immediately, but if he continues like this, the Reds just may do it. Considering what rookie call ups in pitching have looked like this season, you might want to keep an eye on him come September.

Catch you next time...
