What's the Buzz? 6/9/06

So if you were surprised yesterday when I said that Rich Harden went back on the DL (sprained UCL -- same injury that has shelved A.J. Burnett), you're going to need to sit down here.

As expected, atleast by me, the Cubs ended up putting Kerry Wood on the DL with his shoulder stiffness. The move is retroactive to June 7, but there's no guarantee that Wood won't need even more than the regular 2 weeks. Keep watching this one.
Dodgers closer Eric Gagne cut his throwing session short today and looks like he could return to the disabled list again. The inflamed elbow is causing some stiffness and may need longer down time to heal. Takashi Saito will get the save opps for now.
Also returning to the DL and possibly in need of some Tommy John surgery is Blue Jays starter Gustavo Chacin. The Jays brought him back a little too early from his sprained elbow ligament, and aggravated it again tonight. He'll probably be officially put on Saturday morning. There is no timetable for any kind of a return.

In other news...

Congratulations to Greg Maddux who finally got win # 325 today to put him 13th on the all time list breaking a tie with Nolan Ryan and Don Sutton. It was good to see him do even remotely well after his last few outings.
As everyone stays down on Juan Pierre and his poor batting average, let us not forget that this is exactly what he did last year before raising his average back up to .276 and swiped a total of 57 bags.
The Mets are now saying Tuesday for a Cliff Floyd return. He sprained his ankle the other night and hasn't been able to do much on it the past 2 days.
To continue with the sprained ankles, Tigers OF Craig Monroe has been told that he probably won't see any game action until Tuesday. Not that his average was anything to write home about, but they will miss some of his lower lineup power.
The timetable for Roy Oswalt has been set at Wednesday, the first day he is eligible to come off the DL. He said his back felt fine after throwin gsome long toss today.
Reds OF Austin Kearns left today's game with a strained hamstring. He's considered day to day right now, but you never known with the oft-injured Kearns. This doesn't come at a very good time as the team also put 3B Edwin Encarnacion on the DL today with his sprained ankle. Ryan Freel will certainly be getting a whoile lot more time and just maybe we'll get to see a little more from Chris Denorfia.
Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon blew his first save tonight. "You see that?!? He's a man!!! He's not a machine!!! He's not a machine!!!"
The Braves activated catcher Brian McCann today despite reports that he wouldn't be back until early next week. He went 3 for 3 tonight so it looks like he's picked up right where he left off.
So the Mets finally rid themselves of Kaz Matsui, sort of. They traded him to Colorado for OF Eli Marrero, although they are still paying almost all of his contract. Matsui goes straight to the minors and Marrero becomes the extra outfielder and possible part time catcher for New York. We'll have to wait on this one for a little bit. If Clint Barmes remains mired in a year long slump, and Matsui takes to the thin air of Colorado, this stint in the minors could just be a refresher at short for the Japanese import. In the meantime, the Rockies brought up outfielder Jorge Piedra to take the roster spot.
On the mend, Brewers SS J.J. Hardy is still about a week away from resuming baseball activities. Don't count on him starting when he does eventually come back. Bill Hall has entrenched himself there for the time being.
The rumor mill has the Cardinals inquiring about the availability of Pirates 1B/OF Craig Wilson. Unfortunately, the Pirates asked for pitcher Anthony Reyes and the Cards quickly said no. How can they ask for a pitcher with such great upside for a guy who has been unable to consistently crack the Pittsburgh lineup?
And finally, a report out of Detroit says that DH Dmitri Young has checked himself into the Betty Ford Clinic. No word on what the actual addiction is, but it looks like the strained quad is the least of his worries now.

Catch you next time...
