What's the Buzz? 6/8/06
I just don't know what to say. Do I talk about it or not? Jason Grimsley...busted...HGH...possibly named names....something about a wire tap and Barry Bonds. Just awful. And sad. This sounds like it's going to be bad. All sides are crying foul about so many things that it's just going to get ugly. I mean...bottom line...don't cheat and use steroids and all this crap goes away. But just the way the league is handling it. The union. The government. C'mon now. Maybe I'll get into it over the weekend. For fantasy impact, well, if you had Grimsley on your team, how's the cellar lookin' for ya? If not, then just hope that one of your studs isn't a named name.
In other news...
The Braves might not be activating catcher Brian McCann until Tuesday now. He's played in a pair of rehab games, but hasn't caught in either one. The team is not going to bring him back unless his ankle can hold up properly on back to back catching days.
Also for the Braves, remember pitcher Kyle Davies? He went out with a serious groin injury that required surgery. Well, he's running and throwing right now and looks like he could be back shortly after the All Star Break. Just keep him in mind. Don't go running out and grabbing him to stash away. Just keep him in mind. We'll hear more from him, I think.
So the Angels have some major decisions to make about their pitching soon. Bartolo Colon is scheduled to come off the DL and pitch on Sunday, Mike Scioscia said Jered Weaver would not be bumped to the bullpen, but he did mention something about the AAA-Salt Lake rotation. It would be a shame to see him get sent down with the way he's pitching. Someone's gonna be disappointed. I only wish the Yankees had such a "pitching problem".
People are starting to take a more realistic perspective on Derrek Lee's comeback from a broken wrist, finally. Cubs trainers are saying that he won't start swinging a bat until next week at the earliest. Expect him sometime shortly after the All Star Break.
Reds 3B Edwin Encarnacion is still day to day with his sprained ankle. If you own him, you need to hope for a speedy recovery and a quick bat afterwards. Ryan Freel is starting to heat up right now, Brandon Phillips is still producing and so far the outfield is healthy. Encarnacion could lose some at bats if things continue this way.
Apparently Ben Sheets is still a few weeks away before coming back. He had a rough rehab session on Tuesday and he said he just didn't feel good afterwards. I wouldn't count on him until late July.
And speaking of hurt pitchers, the A's lost Rich Harden again as they placed him on the 15 day DL with a sprained elbow ligament. This just isn't good. No one is saying surgery just yet, but keep your ears open for the diagnosis in a few days.
The official word is that Yankees OF Gary Sheffield will have surgeryon his left wrist on Tuesday to repair the torn ligament and dislocated tendon. He will not be back before September. Melky Cabrera owners just stood a little taller today.
Derek Jeter remained out of the lineup with his bruised thumb tonight, but manager Joe Torre doesn't seem concerned about a DL stint. Jeter should be back in action for the weekend series against Oakland.
And while we're with Oakland again, SS Bobby Crosby is day to day after injuring his knuckle fouling off a pitch tonight. It may be a middle infield of Marco Scutaro (playing for the injured Mark Ellis) and Antonio Perez this weekend.
So Dr. Tim Kremcheck signed off on both Kerry Wood and Scott Williamson today. Williamson has tendenitis in his elbow but should be back when his 15 days are up. Wood, on the other hand, will still probably miss his start on Sunday, but may be able to work his way through this shoulder stiffness. I doubt it, but, we'll see.
Keep an eye on Phillies pitcher Randy Wolf who is beginning his rehab assignments while he makes his comeback from Tommy John surgery. He gave up one unearned run with 2 hits in a Single-A game today and will probably make a total of 4 or 5 more starts in the minors. He could be a real nice addition to your squad for the stretch run.
And finally, it looks like the Astros' Chris Burke will not need to go on the DL after all. I guess they just popped it back in and he could be back for this weekend.
