What's the Buzz? 6/4/06
Wow....who saw that shot Prince Fielder gave Geoff Jenkins as they were going after a foul ball? It looked like an offensive lineman throwing a block on a nose tackle. Ouch! Jenkins left the game later with a mild concussion while Fielder became the answer to the question "What was the license plate on that thing?" Consider Jenkins day to day.
Red Sox 1B Kevin Youkilis is also day to day after getting hit on the forarm with a pitch. X-rays results were negative.
Also being considered day to day after being hit by a pitch is Yankees SS Derek Jeter who left today's game with a bruised thumb. Again, x-rays were negative so he should be available for the big upcoming series with Boston.
A's OF Milton Bradley should be back by Wednesday. His return will likely push Jay Payton back to being a bench regular.
The Astros were forced to scratch Roy Oswalt from his start today as he was suffering from back spasms. Phil Garner said he doesn't expect him to go on the DL but you'll have to monitor this. Consider him day to day for now.
Despite poor outings from everyone except Esteban Yan (go figure), the Reds bullpen situation has not changed. Todd Coffey remains the closer even with his blown save opportunity today. David Weathers was no better.
The news on Albert Pujols is in and it doesn't look so good right now. Cardinals trainer Barry Weinberg said the injury, once descibed as moderate to severe, is closer to the severe side. He won't do any baseball activities until he can even just get through sneezing or coughing without pain. The MRI will be tomorrow but for now it looks like this could shelve Pujols for maybe 6 weeks.
The club did get a little boost when Jim Edmonds returned to the lineup to replace Pujols at first. He'll probably stay there for a little while as his injury limits his running and throwing. He can still swing a bat though going 3 for 3 today so it looks like it's safe to get him back in your lineup.
It looks like it's safe to get Rich Harden back in your lineup. He allowed 1 run in his 4 innings in his first outing today. He looked pretty good striking out 6 and only giving up 4 hits, but he did walk 3. He gets the Yankees next this week, so this should be a good test coming up.
The Pirates could be losing catcher Ryan Doumit to the DL with a recurring hamstring problem. He was out for 3 weeks earlier in the year and it is the same leg again with the problem. They'll know more tomorrow, but Ronny Paulino continues to be a decent option in leagues that require more than one catcher.
Shawn Chacon will probably return late this week, after having a pain free rehab start in AA-Trenton today. He'll probably see Oakland on Friday.
Although he has missed the last 3 games with a self-inflicted knee injury, Carl Crawford is expected to return to the lineup on Monday.
The Blue Jays are calling 3B Troy Glaus day to day with back stiffness. He left today's game after a collision with Aaron Hill on a foul pop up.
Ugh!! I may have to start saying something nice about Corey Patterson as he stole 2 more bases today giving him a league leading 25 on the season. He also seems to be keeping the average at a level decent enough to keep him in the lineup. I'm still not totally sold though, so I'll just shut up for now.
