What's the Buzz? 6/3/06
Uh oh....here it comes again....Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood is having his next start pushed back from Sunday to Tuesday due to shoulder stiffness. The Cubs will push Greg Maddux up to Sunday and Carlos Zambrano to Monday. This is yet another entry into the long line of injury problems Wood has, and will continue to suffer from this year. If this doesn't put him on the DL, then I'm sure his next one will.
And speaking of Cubs on the DL, it looks like reliever Scott Williamson should find himself there after experiencing pain in his elbow today.
The Dodgers are trying to shake things up in their rotation again as they have bumped Jae Seo back to the bullpen and are going with former starter Odalis Perez. While he is most definitely a wait and see type of guy, Perez may have some value if he can string a few good starts together or if he gets traded to a better team.
Albert Pujols left today's game with a strained oblique and it looks like the all star first baseman will end up on the 15 day DL. Manager Tony LaRussa did not sound optimistic, but pointed out that they really won't know the full extent of the injury for atleast another 24 hours. If needed, the Cardinals will probably bring up Brian Daubach or Chris Duncan to play first.
Injuries and illness continue to run rampant through the Yankees clubhouse as 1B Jason Giambi is day to day with the same stomach ailment that has sidelined 3B Alex Rodriguez the past few days. Both should be ready to go for next week's scoring period.
Speaking of the Yanks, they are due for some serious bullpen help as Octavio Dotel has been very sucessful in his rehab starts and could be activated within 2 weeks.
Happy 29th birthday to Travis Hafner -- 3 for 4 with a grand slam and 6 RBI? Not too shabby.
The Braves are tryin gto get into the name game as lefty reliever Will Startup has been strong in AAA-Richmond. Startup could get a call up sometime this season.
While Devil Rays 2B Jorge Cantu is still scheduled to come off the DL either Monday or Tuesday, he has gone 2 for 18 in his rehab starts and has looked very unimpressive.
If you were waiting on 3B Bill Mueller to come back and give you some help, you're going to have to keep waiting. It looks like he might be out atleast until mid-July.
As expected, the Orioles will activate pitcher Daniel Cabrera for Monday's game. You might want to leave him on the bench this week as you really don't know what you're getting here. He has great upside, but the Leo Mazzone effect is killing all of the Baltimore starters right now.
The Royals brought up 3B Mark Teahen up from the minors for another audition. He should get the bulk of the starts over the next few days so the team can see if he should remain in their plans or try and get something of value in the trade market. I just don't know what they can fetch for a guy who can't seem to regularly crack the lineup in Kansas City. Tony Graffanino and Esteban German will lose at bats atleast until things are decided.
The White Sox are being cautious with slugger Jim Thome right now. He is suffering from a strained groin and rather than rush him and risk further injury, manager Ozzie Guillen said he will probably sit until Tuesday now.
And finally....Go Damien Easley!!! 3 HR and 7 RBI tonight? Sun shines on a dog's ass atleast once, I guess.
Catch you next time...
