What's the Buzz? 6/2/06
So now in Florida there is a little closer mini-drama as the Marlins let Logan Kensing come back out to pitch after a perfect eighth to pitch a perfect ninth and grab the save. Joe Borowski was available, but Joe Girardi went with the hot hand. He is losing faith in Borowski, so Kensing may see some more opportunities in the future.
Just a warning if you were banking on a big Sunday return from Rich Harden. The A's will have him on a very strict pitch count( roughly 80 pitches), so he may not even get five full innings. Perhaps starting him later on next week is more advisable. When Harden returns, it will be Brad Halsey that gets bumped to the bullpen instead of Kirk Saarloos.
Also for the A's, Milton Bradley should be back around Tuesday to re-crowd that OF situation; Jay Payton being just one of the guys to start losing at bats.
Not that he's going to have any kind of real value, but the Twins brought up infielder Terry Tiffee for some relief for their utility infielders.
So the Orioles are now forced to put 1B/OF Jay Gibbons on the 15 day DL with hip and knee injuries. Luis Matos and Jeff Conine will start to see an increase in playing time. So far I think that's every guy who plays the outfield for Baltimore on the DL now, except Corey Patterson.....NEXT!!!
Continue to consider Yankees catcher Jorge Posada day to day with his tendon problem. He was out of the lineup again tonight. He will receive the majority of the playing time still, but expect to see a whole lot more of Kelly Stinnett than usual.
Also day to day is Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, who is suffering from a stiff back. Fill in Kyle Farnsworth came in during the middle of the eighth and got the 1 2/3 innings win after allowing an inherited runner to score for the blown save.
Tigers starter Mike Maroth had successful surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow today. He's looking at atleast 3 months of recovery time.
Atlanta catcher Brian McCann is on schedule to return next week on Thursday. He'll be worth getting into your lineup for next weekend.
The Giants expect OF Moises Alou to skip any rehab starts and just come off the DL on Monday. If you have weekly roster moves he may be good to go, but if you have daily move capabilities, you might want him to get in a game or two first.
So that concussion Giants catcher Mike Matheny received the othewr night was a little more serious than initially thought. He went on the DL today and Todd Greene will be taking his place.
The Cubs are expecting Mark Prior to make another rehab start on Saturday and may be ready to go next weekend. It will really depend on his outing, as they may feel he needs one more tune up before he's major league game ready.
So the Cardinals sent back down Anthony Reyes, which means that Chris Carpenter will in fact make his start on Tuesday when he is eligible to be activated from the DL. He was out with bursitis in the right shoulder, but it wasn't considered serious. Still, one must be cautious with any pitching injury.
The Cards still don't know what to do with Jim Edmonds. He was out of the lineup again due to his strained abdominal wall, but the team still wants a day or two before deciding to put him on the DL. Of course, any move would obviously be retroactive, so if he's still day to day, maybe another week off will help. Better he goes down now for another week than down for the season.
And here it is...the moment of been waiting for...hopefully a moment of retribution...The Rockies activated catcher Yorvit Torrealba from the disabled list today. He went 0 for 4 tonight, but alteast he caught the whole game. Maybe if he starts hitting it will make up for my tagging him with the old sleeper label this year.
It's tough being a Phillies pitcher this year. Another bad start yesterday paved the way for Gavin Floyd's demotion to Triple-A today. The Phils called up Eude Brito who figures to get a couple of starts until Jon Lieber comes back.
According to a report from the St. Petersburg Times, Rocco Baldelli is only 10-12 days away from returning. It'll crowd the outfield some more, but I'll bet Joey Gathright gets sent down to the minors. They have enough backups in Russell Branyan, Damon Hollins and Ty Wigginton to afford losing Gathright and his sub-.200 batting average. They also should have 2B Jorge Cantu back from the DL on Monday so a roster move should be necessary.
Anyone catch Roger Clemens' son Kody take him yard in practice the other day? The Rocket threw him 4 straight fastballs and saw the last one go out towards the highway. If I get the footage, I'll link it.
If you're in a league with daily moves, keep an eye on the Tigers lineup this week. Manager Jim Leyland is handing out days off to try and re-vitalize his team. They've now lost 4 of their last 5 against the upper echelon Yankees and Red Sox. Ivan Rodriguez who received tonight off will also probably get Sunday off. Chris Shelton was out 2 nights ago but returned tonight. Keep your eyes open on this.
The White Sox have been using Pablo Ozuna in centerfield at practice fueling speculation that Brian Anderson could be headed to Triple-A sometime after he serves his 5 game suspension for beating up John Mabry. Sox OF Rob Mackowiak will benefit the most if the move is ever made.
Angels youngster Jered Weaver looked real good again tonight going 6 2/3 innings while only allowing 2 runs. He is making it hard for the Angels who have Bartolo Colon coming back soon. Perhaps older brother Jeff Weaver gets the hook when Colon gets back, but it should really be Kevin Gregg.
And finally, Arizona/Atlanta and New York/San Francisco both rained out today...both will be made up as weekend double headers -- adjust your lineups accordingly.
Catch you next time...
