What's the Buzz? 6/1/06

Looks like the injury bug continues to feast in Tampa Bay. While getting all fired up arguing an out call at the plate, Carl Crawford injured his left knee and is being listed as day to day. Manager Jerry Narron said there was stiffness and a strain, but no apparent structural damage. He'll probably just miss a game or two unless they find something serious.
The Phillies expect Cole Hamels to return to the rotation next week. He will joing Gavin Floyd and Ryan Madson in the unbelievably young rotation as Jon Lieber just went on the DL. Make sure you get Hamels active in time for his start next week.
Juan Gonzalez (do you believe that? JuanGonzalez?) signed a contract with the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League. Do I smell comeback? Probably not. But maybe if he does well, some major league team will come looking for him down the stretch.
The Red Sox Wily Mo Pena had surger today to repair his broken hamate bone. It'll probably be 6-8 weeks until he comes back, although there's always speculation it could be more like 4-6 weeks. Either way, we're looking at a post-All Star Break return.
As a result of Roman Colon's second inning meltdown against the Yankees a few days ago, the Tigers are going with Zach Miner as the rotation replacement for the injured Mike Maroth, who underwent arthroscopic surgery today to remove bone chips from his elbow. Let Miner get his feet wet before even thinking about picking him up.
The Dodgers finally put 2B Jeff Kent on the DL with what they are listing as a sprained left wrist. The move was retroactive to May 28th and he should be back when his 15 days are up. In the meantime, the team called up Joel Guzman who will probably play third while Ramon Martinez and Willy Aybar platoon at second. Hmm. I thought for sure they'd bring back Oscar Robles, but maybe they see something in Guzman that no one else does.
The Angels got good word as Bartolo Colon pitched a pain free 4 innings in his first rehab start today for A-Rancho Cucamonga. He will get atleast one more, probably on Tuesday in AAA-Salt Lake and hopefully rejoin the rotation some time next weekend.
The Indians have pushed Kevin Millwood's next start back from Sunday to Tuesday as he has been suffering from a stiff back the past few days. If it's not too serious, then he'll make his start on Tuesday and will probably end up a two start pitcher next week. Unfortuantely, the 2nd start will be against Boston in Fenway, and that's never fun.
Terrible news for the Yankees as they put OF Gary Sheffield back on the DL with what was diagnosed as a torn ligament and dislocated tendon in his wrist. He will not have surgery and has opted to rehab it instead. No timetable was even talked about and manager Joe Torre says that it sounds like it will be a while. Some are speculating that he will miss most of the rest of the season. Looks like the Junior Yankees will be getting lots of playing time still.
Also for the Bombers, Kyle Farnsworth blew the save against the Tigers tonight. He got the chance to close out the game as Mariano Rivera is experiencing back stiffness, which probably stems from his 3 inning appearance the other day. Consider Rivera day to day for now.
The Twins optioned pitcher Scott Baker to the minors today. Despite being the second best pitcher in the rotation so far, Baker's rough May was all Ron Gardenhire needed to ship out the youngster. He'll probably be back at some point this season.
The A's expect Rich Harden to be the starter for this Sunday's game. He threw 2 scoreless innings at Triple A today.
And finally, the rumors out of Colorado have the Rockies activating catcher Yorvit Torrealba before Friday's game....maybe there's still time for me to redeem myself for that sleeper pick.

That's about it...slow baseball day...

Catch you next time...
