What's the Buzz? 9/1/06
O.K. really....it has to come to an end soon doesn't it? Even as a die-hard Yankees fan, I just can't take enjoyment in the demise of a team when the proverbial ship sinks this bad. It's like it never ends for the Red Sox. I'm almost willing to accept the fact that someone in the organization sold every Bostonian's soul for the 2004 World Series title. It's not even going from bad to worse at this point. It's going from horriffic to absurdly atrocious. Today, all star rookie closer Jonathan Papelbon left tonight's game in the ninth with a right shoulder injury. He was pitching for his third straight day and it looks like his heavy work load may be catching up to him. Preliminary reports are downplaying it as just a pinched nerve, but we'll wait for test results. For now consider him to be day to day.
But wait...there's more...apparently Curt Schilling has a strained lat muscle and he will miss his next scheduled start. Looks like the recently acquired Kevin Jarvis is going to get a start in the bigs after all.
Also for the Sox, the preliminary diagnosis is in for Jon Lester and it looks like anaplastic large cell lymphoma. It is treatable, probably through chemotherapy, but Lester's season is over. Let's just hope all goes well with his treatment. The doctor's are optimistic about its treatment which is good. Still, our thoughts are with him and his family.
And there's no new news on David Ortiz. He's out of the hospital but has not been cleared by doctors to play just yet. There's still a chance he could miss the rest of the year.
In other news...
Don't worry too much about Blue Jays 3B Troy Glaus and his leaving tonight's game after 4 innings. It was only a sinus infection and he'll probably be back on Saturday.
If you picked up and held onto Rangers OF Nelson Cruz still, you might get a chance to play him a little more. Word out of Texas is that Buck Showalter plans to play him a littl emore regularly which will definitley give his value a boost.
The official word on Twins starter Brad Radke is that he has a stress fracture in his shoulder, on top of the partially torn labrum. He has been advised to not throw for a minimum of two weeks. He still claims he wants to come back, but he may not even get the opportunity given his need for rest and recovery time. It is September, isn't it? As reported yesterday, Scott Baker will take his rotation spot. Now it's just a matter of whether or not he lives up to my September Sleeper hope...um...I mean hype.
The Yankees could be getting a little power surge soon as Hideki Matsui took BP today outside for the first time and could be back with the team (probably as a DH) sometime late next week. They also are waiting on Gary Sheffield to return from his wrist surgery. He'll meet with doctor's lat enext week and if all goes well with his examination he could be cleared to take batting practice soon. There is a chance he could rejoing the tema for the final 2 weeks of the season.
The perpetually battered and bruised Eric Chavez sat out tonight after an MRI revealed a minor ankle sprain. They say he could be back as early as Saturday, so if you can wait until the last minute to activate him, then check back for reports.
So far, so good for Phillies closer Tom Gordon's rehab. He's thrown two scoreless innings, and should get some more work on Saturday. It looks like he could be back by the end of the weekend, so get ready to put him back in your lineup next week.
Also for the Phillies, they picked up Randall Simon from the Texas Rangers for cash in a little waiver deal. I don't think Simon has any value unless there's a road trip to Milwaukee in the future and you get fantasy points for hitting a giant sausage.
In another waiver deal, the Nationals picked up OF Nook Logan from the Tigers for a player to be named later. Center field has been a pretty consistent problem for the Nats this year and I don't think Logan solves it. Even if you're in need of some cheap steals, he won't be your guy.
The Dodgers brought back a few familiar faces, 1B James Loney, OF Matt Kemp, and catcher Einar Diaz. The only one who looks liek he could have any fantasy value is Kemp who should probably find a place somewhere in the outfield when opponents throw a lefty.
The Braves activated OF Brian Jordan, SP Kyle Davies and IF Willy Aybar from the DL today. Jordan should pinch hit a little, Aybar goes to utility duty, but Davies should go right into the rotation. He'll get the start on Saturday and should get a look in NL only leagues.
An dfinally, the Devil Rays activated 3B Ty Wigginton from the DL today and he could have some value in AL only leagues. He'll get time at various positions, probably at first mostly, and could be a decent stopgap if you are desperate.
Tropical Storm/Hurricane Ernesto wreaking havoc along the east coast causing some rainouts so there's some doubleheader action tomorrow. Make sure you adjust your lineups.
Lots of call ups and activations today but so many without any fantasy meaning right now, I just don't have it in me to list them all. Sure I may be missing some "notables" like Darin Erstad or Vinny Castilla or Lance Niekro, but so far only Delmon Young looks like the big one worth singling out.
