What's the Buzz? 8/6/06

The big news tonight comes not from fantasy news, but from reality as the Mets are just doing everything right these days. First it was a contract extension for Jose Reyes and now we have a new six year deal for All Star 3B David Wright. Locking up the foundation of the team. The perfect strategy. For their needs, both players are totally worth it for the Mets to hold onto. It's just smart baseball on Omar Minaya's part. Great job Omar....great job Mets!!

Now for the news...

Sticking with the Mets, OF Cliff Floyd remained sidelined today and is still listed as day to day with unflammation around his Achilles tendon. If you have a healthier alternative, then use him. Floyd says he'd like to play on Tuesday, but that really doesn't mean anything. Endy Chavez will fill in for him for the time being and if Floyd is out for an extended period of time again, Chavez may be worth a short term look in NL only leagues.
It looks like you're just going to have to take your chances with Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb. He'll throw a side session on Monday and a bullpen session on Wednesday and then see if he's ready to go on Friday. If he does go on Friday, then it's against the Giants and that might be too favorable a matchup for him to risk missing. His replacement, Dustin Nippert, was sent back down to the minors today, so that's definitely a good sign.
A's outfielder Mark Kotsay is listed as day to day with back spasms after leaving today's game. He should be ok, so don't expect fill in Bobby Kielty to go taking over for any lengthy period of time.
David Ortiz...40 HR...this guy's just a beast. As great as he is, though, I still can't give him all the credit. He couldn't hit his way out of a paper bag in Minnesota and didn't start blossoming as a hitter until he got in the lineup with Manny Ramirez. I hate to throw Manny a compliment here, but Ortiz' bat is a direct result of how dangerous a hitter Ramirez is. Now the Yankee in me needs to go throw up.
I probably should have included Jose Contreras on my list in my new article on Addict Fantasy Sports today. Since the All Star Break, he's 1-3 with a 4.18 ERA and that's before he gave up 6 runs in 6 2/3 innings today. If you traded for him, you're just going to have to hope the bleeding stops somehow.
As expected, Indians manager Eric Wedge has pulled Fausto Carmona out of the closers' role. He's going to maybe give him another shot down the road, but for now it looks like Jason Davis and Rafael Betancourt will get the save opportunities.
Speaking of the Tribe, x-rays were negative on the ankle of Casey Blake and he is considered day to day with a sprain. He may only miss a few games, but the team has not ruled out a DL stint. While he's out, Victor Martinez should move to first with Kelly Shoppach getting full time duty behind the plate. If he goes on the DL, the team may bring back Ryan Garko. Wait until you hear something official about Blake before maneuvering. I still like Garko in AL only leagues if he gets the opportunity to play regularly.
Yankees fans keep your fingers crossed...after a successful bullpen session today with no problems reported, Octavio Dotel could join the team sometime this week. If he has no additional setbacks and does get the call, he could be a nice pickup if you need relief help.
And finally, the Braves officially pulled Andruw Jones back from waivers today ending speculation that he was on his way out of Atlanta. To thank the only team he's ever known, Jones went 3-4 with a 2 run shot today. Sorry Red Sox fans...he's not coming to your town. Give Coco Crisp a chance. The injury was some tough luck and he'll get back on track.

Catch you next time...
