What's the Buzz? 8/4/06
Alas, the streak is over. Phillies 2B Chase Utley went 0-5 today ending his 35 game hit streak, the longest in the majors since...well, teammate Jimmy Rollins' that ran from last year through the beginning of this season. Utley hit over .400 from June 23rd through August 3rd to record the 10th longest hit streak in MLB history. It was bound to come to an end soon, so we'll just leave it with a congratulations and thanks for helping your proud, proud owners.
In other news today...
So far, it looks like Yankees 1B Craig Wilson's value is getting a boost here, as he has been playing regularly while Jason Giambi hits out of the DH slot. He'll have some value for the next 2 months if he continues to get the starts, but remember, we're talking Craig Wilson here. There has to be a reason he couldn't get the regular time in a horror show like Pittsburgh.
It looks like the Brewers could be without 2B Rickie Weeks for the duration of the season. He stopped his hitting session today when he began to experience further discomfort in his injured wrist. The team may be leaning towards shutting him down for the year. It's 2 years in a row now that Weeks has let his owners down with a season ending injury. It's getting to the point where, no matter how great his potential may be, he no longer fits the bill as a potential keeper.
After an MRI revealed a partial tear in his rotator cuff, Bartolo Colon will likely be sidelined for the remainder of the season. He had been dealing with the shoulder problems since last year, and the elbow problems were supposedly a result of a change in his delivery to protect the shoulder. He is going with rehab rather than surgery right now and wants to maybe come back by September 1st, but with his history, a return seems unlikely.
If you were hoping for a speedy return by Devil Rays ace Scott Kazmir, you'll be waiting til atleast next Friday. The team insists that they are just being cautious and there is nothing further wrong with him, but pushing his start back again isn't a good sign.
More catching woes for the Red Sox as Doug Mirabelli had to leave today's game with a twisted left ankle. Newly acquired Javy Lopez entered the game and went a stellar 0-4. They can't call up Ken Huckaby right away, having just sent him down, so it looks like they'll bring up Corky Miller. Unless Mirabelli misses significant time, Miller won't have any real value in any leagues. Lopez should get the start on Saturday, but they'll probably have to rest him on Sunday. He's just not the player he once was with the Braves. The exact deal, by the way is Lopez for cash and a player to be named...probably OF Adam Stern.
If you're looking for a little middle relief help, the Mariners activated Rafael Soriano from the DL today. He's usually good to vulture a win here and there and if your league counts holds, he'll help you out.
Due to fatigue, Tigers rookie sensation Justin Verlander will be skipped in the rotation this week. At 135+ innings thrown already, he is 5 innings past his 2005 totals giving him a new career high in innings pitched. It may not happen too often, but manager Jim Leyland could rest his yound star to save him for the upcoming playoffs. Wilfredo Ledezma will take his spot in the rotation, but I don't reccommend him.
Bruce Chen will continue to stay in the Orioles' rotation as the team put Kris Benson on the DL, retro to July 26, with a sore elbow. Benson won't be eligible to return until next Fruiday at the earliest, and if you saw Chen tonight against the Yankees, you know what kind of damage he can do....to your own team.
Speaking of the Yankees, they designated reserve OF Bubba Crosby for assignment today and he should probably be picked up by someone else off of waivers. Rumor has it that Joe Girardi is interested in bringing him to the Marlins, but they already have enough mediocre back ups.
The Mets finally made a decision on the status of backup catcher Ramon Castro as they put him on the DL, retro to July 27, with a strained oblique. The team will bring up veteran Mike DiFelice, but he doesn't appear to be getting a whole lot of time ahead of Paul LoDuca. The team could also use Eli Marrero behind the plate, but he seems to be aching with a stiff neck right now.
The A's put SS Bobby Crosby on the DL finally with a strained lower back. He'll be replaced in the lineup by Marco Scutaro and the team purchased the contract of D'Angelo Jimenez to use him as a backup utility infielder. Neither really has the ability to help your fantasy squad out too much, so don't go rushing out to scour the waiver wire for them.
And finally, ESPN was buzzing themselves with a rumor that the Braves put Andruw Jones on waivers with the plan to trade him, and he was claimed by multiple teams, none of which are being divulged. Wait and see how this plays out before worrying. If you're in an NL only league, you should probably set up a plan to have a replacement outfielder just in case he moves across leagues. We'll keep you posted on this one.
Catch you next time....
