What's the Buzz? 8/2/06

The heat index continues to read in triple digits and New York City looks like it could be on the verge of another blackout. If my neighbor turns on his air conditioner while I'm writing this we could all be screwed, so I'll get to it as fast as I can...

Braves 1B Adam LaRoche is being called day to day after leaving tonight's game with a hamstring injury. It's the same hamstring he tore last year, but LaRoche says that it's happened before and that it's just scar tissue being torn up. He seems to think he'll be back in a day or so, but let's leave that to the team doctors. If you have a healthier alternative, you might want to use him until LaRoche's condition is confirmed. Rookie Scott Thorman will fill in for the time being.
Indians rookie closer Fausto Carmona seems to be possessed by the soul of Derrick Turnbow right now as he took his third straight beating in his new role. The teams seems to be committed to him and manager Eric Wedge hasn't even hinted about lookin gfor someone else right now. If he's not too wrapped up in his head, Carmona could come out of this fine. For now, you might want to sit him until he finds his groove.
So Kerry Wood announced today the he will not have surgery on his right shoulder and he's looking to make a comeback next year as a reliever. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow!!! That was a pretty quick hook for Armando Benitez tonight. This doesn't look good for his owners as the Giants were apparently serious about the whole closing by committee thing.
Bye-bye Boof!!! Called up today and after just one start (and not a good one at that) the Twins sent Boof Bonser back to the minors and brought up RHP Mike Smith to take his place as the team's emergency starter. With Scott Baker also being shipped down to the minors, it looks like it shouldn't be too long before we see Matt Garza.
The Mets finally made a decision on their 5th starter and it's not super-prospect Mike Pelfrey. The team has decided to go with John Maine and sent Pelfrey down to Triple-A. Since he came up from Double-A straight to the bigs, this shouldn't look like too much of a demotion. He looked great at times and at times he looked like an unseasoned rookie. There's a chance he could come back in September, but he'll definitely be in the starting 5 in 2007.
And finally, Chase Utley...34 and counting. 'nuff said

Catch you next time...
