What's the Buzz? 7/11/06

So the AL does it again, this time with some late inning heroics. Congratulations to MVP Michael Young for his 9th inning base hit that scored both Jose Lopez (running for Paul Konerko) and Troy Glaus. The hit stood as the game winner and the AL went on to win it 3-2. The loss went to Trevor Hoffman while the W went to B.J. Ryan. Yankess closer Mariano Rivera with the save. Whoever wins the American League pennant is obligated to send atleast a box of chocolates to Young's home in Texas. All in all, not too bad of a game.

Just a bit of news today...

The Texas Rangers optioned DH Jason Botts back to the minors today. I guess they saw something in him they didn't like as he was supposed to get more playing time when Phil Nevin was traded to Chicago. Maybe he'll be back another time, but really....you just can't come up to DH. Unless you're cracking 50 HR a year, you need to be able to play the field.
Does Andy Marte winning the Triple-A Home Run Derby with 29 total homers speed up the clock on his arrival to the majors? I hope so...
There are some major rumblings in San Diego right now as they make plans for the second half. First, they are trying to trade Ryan Klesko now to a contender looking for a bat, and now there's talk of Mark Bellhorn getting most of the playing time at third. For obvious reasons, the team has soured on Vinny Castilla and Geoff Blum will only be the guy to spell someone every now and then. Bellhorn could make a good pickup if he runs with the job. Don't get your hopes up though. GM Kevin Towers is looking into possible trades for Brewers' Bill Hall, the Braves' Wilson Betemit, and even the aforementioned Marte. If Bellhorn comes out strong in the second half though, it could postpone a trade.
There is still no timetable set for the return of Blue Jays OF Alex Rios, but he was in Pittsbirgh tonight enjoying the All Star Game.
The Mets are sticking with Mike Pelfrey in the rotation, for the time being. He'll be used as the 5th starter behind John Maine, but be careful. If he falters, the Mets will give him the quick hook and send him back to the minors.
And finally, the word out of Minnesota is that the club is bringing back Scott Baker to take the roster spot left vacant with Ruben Sierra's dismissal. This would be a great move for the Twins what with Carlos Silva being both injured and horrible. The team really needs to commit to throwing him out there every 5 games. Once he finds his groove he's going to be a solid pitcher for you. His strikeout potential is fantastic. If you have room on the bench to stash him away, I recommend the pick up. Not right now, but after we see just how the Twins are handling him.

Catch you next time...
