What's the Buzz? 7/3/06

Let's just get to it tonight...

Braves 1B Adam LaRoche is being called day to day with back spasms. Scott Thorman filled in for today and probably will do so again if LaRoche needs another day or two off.
The debut for Indians rookie Jeremy Sowers went pretty well tonight considering he was set to debut against the Yankees. He gave up and early 2 run shot to Jason Giambi, but then settled down to pitch a great game. He actually retired 14 of the last 15 batters he faced as he went 7 innings with just 2 earned runs. He gets the Orioles the next time out so he should definitely have some value in AL only leagues.
White Sox 2B Tadahito Iguchi is day to day with a sprained ankle he suffered in a collision with Jermaine Dye tonight. Dye was able to remain in the game but Iguchi had to be helped off by the trainer. He'll probably be out for the next few games, so look for Alex Cintron to get a little more playing time.
The Mets are struggling with more than just losing 5 of their last 6. Pedro Martinez remains sidelined with a strained hip and they plan to just have him throw a light side session in a couple of days. Manager Willie Randolph says Martinez could pitch on Wednesday if he is feeling up to it, but the team is really just hoping that he'll be available for one of Saturday's games. If he's not ready by Saturday, Pedro will go on the DL and the team will call up Mike Pelfrey from Double-A.
As far as Pedro's missed start tonight, well...the Mets thought it best to option Alay Soler (rocked by the Yankees and the Red Sox) back to Triple-A and call up John Maine to pitch against the Pirates rather than use Darren Oliver. Um, yeah...that worked out great for them.
Not that any of these guys should be on you ractive fantasy roster, but the Royals placed Mike Wood on the 15 day DL with an inflammation in his back. Luke Hudson will take his spot in the rotation.
The Mariners officially put Jeremy Reed on the DL today with a broken thumb. They are speculating that it could be a season-ender. They call up Shin Soo Choo to platoon with Willie Bloomquist in center field.
The MRI on Marlins starter Brian Moehler revealed that there were no broken bones in his foot. They're still not sure about ligament damage, so they'll just have to wait a day or two before deciding his fate. It looks like a DL stint with a return a week or so after the All Star Break.
The Diamondbacks optioned reliever Jose Valverde to Triple-A tonight to make room for starter Juan Cruz. We'll probably see Valverde again later, but his value is very minimal. Cruz made the start against the Dodgers tonight but didn't fare too well with 4 earned runs in just 3 innings. He should fix these control issues in time for his next start and should still be a good play in NL only leagues.
Word out of San Francisco is Moises Alou will not be activated from the DL on Tuesday when he is eligible. He's still atleast a week away, so if you've got Steve Finley, well...enjoy. He's got a nice trip to Colorado going on here.
And finally, bad news for all of you waiting for Rich Harden to come back, don't hold your breath. He did not respond well from a side session the other day and will be shut down completely for about a week. A late July return will not happen, and now they're talking Tommy John surgery. This is what happens when you fall for the hype and ignore the prior injuries. Hopefully you pawned him off elsewhere. If not...get ready to drop him as soon as they say he's done.

Have a great 4th of July.

Catch you next time...
