What's the Buzz? 7/10/06
The obvious start today is "Congratulations!!!!!!" to Phillies 1B Ryan Howard for winning the 2006 Home Run Derby. Howard beat out Mets 3B David Wright in the finals with 5 outs left to go. Let's just hope he doesn't go the way teammate Bobby Abreu did after last year. Ugh-lee!!!
And now for some news....
The Astos will have pitcher Brandon Backe make on emore rehab start on Friday and, if all goes well, activate him to start early next week. His return will push out either Taylor Buchholz or Wandy Rodriguez. My guess is Buchholz.
The Royals have finally seen Mike MacDougal pitch well on consecutive days during his rehab and will probably activate him right after the Break. It is very possible that he will immediately assume the closer's role as Ambiorix Burgos has been as close to horrible as you can get.
The Red Sox have sent pitcher Jason Johnson to Single-A ball today. That was fast huh? He's going to the Carolina League because they start before Double and Triple-A and he can get a few starts in quickly. He may be back in Boston, but it's not going to be for a little while.
The Brewers have also sent catcher Chad Moeller down to Triple-A. He was outrighted which means he can refuse the assignment, but there is little interest for him anywhere else really. He'll probably stick around the minors until rosters exapand and the Brewers can carry 3 catchers without worry.
The Minnesota Twins have placed DH Ruben Sierra on waivers for the purpose of giving him his outright release. I don't even know who would pick him up , but I guess this means that the team is bringing back Rondell White soon. If the Twins want White over Sierra, then that doesn't say much for his value.
And finally, Yankees manager Joe Torre officially announced that Aaron Guiel and Bernie Williams are moving into a straight platoon in right field when the season resumes. This definitely cuts what little value Bernie had and definitely bumps up the value for Guiel.
Watch your rosters as managers are announcing their rotations today.
