What's the Buzz? 7/9/06

So one of the biggest sleeper busts so far has got to be Brad Wilkerson. Everyone, including myself, thought this guy was going to come to Texas and get back to that 30 HR level and increase in his stolen base total. What a sham!!! This dude blows. He strikes out at a ridiculous rate and his bum shoulder isn't helping. He sits against lefties these days and is receiving cortisone shots to maybe help him out. At this point all it's going to do is make it hurt less for him when he whiffs his way through the second half. Prove me wrong Whiffy!!! I dare you.
For all you Curt Schilling owners out there.....whoa!! A little scare there huh? He got thumped on the elbow by a Jim Thome line drive and left the game with some big time swelling. X-Rays were negative, so the All Star Break shoul dprove to be a nice rest for him.
Jermaine Dye. Unsung hero? First half stud? This guy gets overlooked like Garrett Anderson did before the Angels won their World Series.
The Giants' Omar Vizquel is being listed as day to day after leaving today's game with hamstring tightness. Again, with the Break coming, he shouldn't miss any time when the second half starts.
Rumor has it that wife-beating Brett Myers will return to the Phillies on Friday after the All Star Break. There is no word on when he will get his next start or whether the team will punish him for the embarrassment. If there is punishment, look for Myers to take it out on his wife in private next time.
Something else straight out of Rumorsville is the Red Sox going after Phillies OF Bobby Abreu. It doesn't look like that great a fit (contracts and all), but he would definitely be an upgrade over the Trot Nixon/Wily Mo Pena platoon.
Speaking of the Sox, an MRI on Tim Wakefield's back revealed that there was no bulging disc so rest and minor rehab over the Break should hopefully get him back on track. His start just after the Break has been pushed back, so the team wiull take some time making decisions with him.
Once again there are injury problems for Mark Prior. He apparently hurt his side in batting practice and was scratched from his start today. Now they're saying that he is questionable for his first start after the Break and a DL stint may be needed. Typical. When are people going to learn with this guy. Maybe he should try badminton, because baseball is obviously too taxing for him.
And speaking of added injuries, Nationals starter John Patterson was forced out of today's game with the same forearm strain that had him on the DL for 2 months this year. Hmmmm. On the DL with a forearm strain, comes back and experiences "dead arm", leaves today with same forearm strain. Pattern? Symptom of something else wrong? Stay away from him in the second half.

And seriously.....can we all just take a moment here and pay attention to some of these guys? Patterson, Prior, Rich Harden? Injury prone, injury prone, injury prone. If you're trying to compete in your league and you're making deals, stay away from these guys. Don't buy into the hype that basically ends with their names. I'm sure there are plenty of other options for you. Guaranteed.....if you go after or stick with one of these guys...or someone similar......all hype and no performance....you're going to ruin your second half.....better make sure you have great depth.

That's about it for today.....enjoy the All Star Break and hope your players get the necessary rest they need for a big second half. We'll hit you with some picks for the second half over the next few days, so enjoy and good luck with your trading.

Catch you next time...
