What's the Buzz? 5/19/06

So interleague play started today...

How'd it go in the big "inter-city" games? Well, the Mets took down the Yankees, the White Sox beat up the Cubbies, the Dodgers obliterated the Angels, and the A's took the Battle of the Bay. For the rest of them, you can check out the boxscores.

As far as news goes...

While Phil Garner showed recognition for the err of his ways and returned Brad Lidge to the closer's role, Atlanta's Chris Reitsma opened up the door for his possible exit after blowing another save. There is talk of Oscar Villareal filling in.
Dodgers closer Eric Gagne took another positive step towards a June 1st return as he threw about 20 pain free pitched in BP today.
So the Yankees are forced to add another outfielder to the DL in Bubba Crosby, who went on with a pulled hamstring. They brought up Kevin Thompson and some dude named Mitch Jones to join Kevin Reese and Melky Cabrera to form one of the most unintimidating outfields in Yankees history. On top of that, Randy Johnson continues to blow, Jorge Posada left the game with back spasms tonight and Bernie Williams will probably sit Saturday after tweaking what looked like a hamstring. Trouble's brewing in the Bronx...and it don't look good. To show how desperate they are, they just signed Terrence Long to a minor league contract.
The Nationals made a rather odd move by sending Ryan Church down to AAA and recalling OF Alex Escobar. Sure Church was slumping since his return from the flu, but to demote him right now just seems silly. The team is not better off with an Escobar/Marlon Byrd platoon.
The Marlins decided against activating OF Jeremy Hermida from the DL today. Look for him to come back just after the weekend.
While he looked pretty good in his extended spring training game, Cubs pitcher Mark Prior is still atleast 4 weeks away.
OF Shane Costa returned from the DL today and started in center field for the Royals today. He will be there until David DeJesus returns; when that will be is anyone's guess right now.
The Orioles have decided to wait until after this weekend to activate 2B Brian Roberts. He should be available for Monday or Tuesday's game.
The Astros have moved Willie Taveras back into the leadoff spot. Now hopefully, he will steal some more bases...yeesh.
Anyone else see the Cubs signed Tony Womack and put him in AAA-Iowa?
The Rangers put reliever Antonio Alfonseca on the DL with elbow problems.
And finally, for intentionally hitting Barry Bonds (and trying to with the 6 pitches before), Astros reliever Russ Springer has been suspended for 4 games. Phil Garner took the one game ban as well. Neither will appeal.

Catch you next time...
