What's the Buzz? 5/18/06

So the Yankees pitching staff is becoming quite the drama...when last we left, Carl Pavano had left a rehab start with Triceps tightness, a wounded Shawn Chacon was getting shelled by Texas, and Tanyon Sturtze was running off to Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion on that torn rotator cuff. Well today, "Crippled" Carl couldn't straighten out his arm and has been shut down indefinitely, Chacon will miss his next start with his bruised shin, and the torn rotator cuff is confirmed for Sturtze. Aaron Small steps in to the rotation for now. If Pavano truly is done for the season, look for the Yanks to make a move for some pitching help.
If that's not bad enough, Gary Sheffield still hasn't swung a bat, Bubba Crosby tweaked his hamstring tonight and was replaced by Kevin Reese, and now we're hearing about a cracked bone in Johnny Damon's foot. Damon says it is not a problem and will continue to play. Keep your eyes on this.
The Reds activated Rich Aurilia from the DL today. He will step back into his platoon against lefties with Scott Hatteberg at first.
There's closer drama in Cincy also as current closer David Weathers was used for two innings to set up Todd Coffey for the save tonight. Manager Jerry Narron says that Weathers is still the closer. Tonight's decision was based on who he thought was able to go two innings between the two for this game. Either way, it should make Weathers owners nervous. Coffey was a sleeper pick during the spring when things were still up in the air.
Not an ideal start for Phillies super rookie Cole Hamels tonight but what's up with Ryan Madson letting in yet another inherited runner score? 3 ER would have made his line a little more palatable. That's twice he's done it to him. Sabotage anyone? How well do we really know this Madson guy?
Akinori Otsuka shook off Tuesday's disaster with a perfect ninth tonight. Francisco Cordero owners should remain concerned.
The Mets got some bad news when Brian Bannister was removed from tonight's rehab game with a hamstring problem. He will have an MRI on Friday, but this could delay his return. New York will have to endure the duo of Jose Lima and Jeremi Gonzalez for a little while longer. And you thought the Yankees were having pitching woes...
The Cubs finally activate Kerry Wood from the DL. He gave up 4 runs in 5 innings, struk out 6 and had no walks. He did however serve up the long ball 3 times. He should be ok to use as he has the Marlins his next time out.
Not too much else going on today...

a bump here, a bruise there...

do I really have to acknowledge Dmitri Young choking his ex-girlfriend?

Catch you next time...
