What's the Buzz? 4/9/06

We can start off today with a little forgotten acknowledgement from yesterday as Astros 2B Craig Biggio became the 43rd player to reach 2800 hits. He's from my hometown so I've tracked him his whole career....excellent job Craig....3000 and a ticket to the Hall is just around the corner.

In today's news...

Devil Rays' 2B Jorge Cantu remained sidelined today but expect to see him this week. He should be back so he should remain in your active lineup.
OF Coco Crisp missed today with a jammed index finger from the other day. It happened in a failed attempt to steal third but hey.....he'll be back on Tuesday and he's doing a lot of running.
Both Jermaine Dye and Chad Tracy were back in their respective lineups, so both look to be ok for this week.
Reds' catcher Jason LaRue will not be activated until Thursday of this week.
Astros' Eric Munson will apparently start catching Wandy Rodriguez regularly. It gives him added eligibility but it's still really not enough to be starting him at all.
Several closer situations are getting interesting although managers are saying not to read too much into it -- Pirates' Mike Gonzalez and Cardinals' Jason Isringhausen were both brought in in the eighth; Gonazalez because they needed a lefty and didn't have one in the pen and Izzy because they were up by one and had a man on. Gonzalez gave up a "meaningless" run and Roberto Hernandez got the save. Izzy proceeded to load the bases and give up a grand slam. Both are still expected to close, but it still doesn't make owners comfortable to see their guys come in that early.
In Tampa Bay, Dan Miceli got another save and appears to have a "lock" on the job and Red Sox Jonathan Papelbon got his third save while Keith Foulke came in in the eighth. If Papelbon continues, there's no reason to change. This is not good if you took a chance on Foulke in the draft.
And also, in Atlanta, Chris Reitsma blew another save and has struggled in 2 of his 3 opportunities. He'll need a few more mistakes, though, before they start making any changes so he's still safe for now.
Twins' ace Johann Santana had another less than stellar outing today. While he remains a top flight pitcher, consecutive bad outings just reinforce my pitching argument in fantasy baseball. For even more evidence, please check out the pitching line for Padres' ace Jake Peavy today.
Braves' 3B Chipper Jones was helped off of the field today after jamming his right knee. They say he should be back by Wednesday, but if you have him you should get ready to grab Wilson Betemit for insurance. For the record , the countdown has begun on how long it will take before my friend Hiro tries to trade him.
And finally, as a remote possible sleeper, check out Dodgers' 1B James Loney. He's looking ok as a replacement for the perrennially injured Nomar Garciaparra. Just keep your eye on him...don't just grab him yet. It isn't very difficult for him to outplay Olmedo Saenz.

Catch you next time...
