What's the Buzz? 9/23/06

Well, whether it's the beginning, the middle, or the very end of the season, the injury bug always finds a way to bite Nationals 1B Nick Johnson in the ass. Nick the Stick (in the midst of a solid and healthy year) was carted off the field after a collision with teammate Austin Kearns. Diagnosis? How about a broken right femur? Ouch!! Johnson will have surgery tonight and the Nats are hoping he'll be back for Spring Training 2007. In the meantime, Jose Vidro should be shifted over to first, occasionally being spelled by Robert Fick.

In other news...

Remember when Brian Roberts had his arm broken and elbow dislocated last year? Well Baltimore almost got the same, but on the giving end rather than the receiving after Corey Patterson ran into Phil Nevin during a play at first base today. Nevin was immediately sent for x-rays, which fortunately came back negative. He is now considered day to day with a bone bruise on his wrist.
Joining Nevin on the day to day list are: Manny Ramirez (knee), Jermaine Dye (hamstring), Adrian Beltre (hamstring -- way to jinx him, Brody!), Jose Contreras (hamstring -- shut down for the year), Melvin Mora (stomach virus), Edwin Jackson (concussion), Jim Edmonds (concussion -- some positive reports came in but don't get overly-excited just yet), Yuniesky Betancourt (knee), Paul LoDuca (thumb), Carlos Beltran (quad), Brad Radke (shoulder -- rumors say he could make a start next week), Nomar Garciaparra (quad), Ray Durham (knee), Todd Greene (thigh), and Chipper Jones (toe/foot).
Don't worry about Anthony Reyes missing his start today. He was scratched and sent to the bullpen only because Jason Marquis was actually healthy enough to pitch. Reyes shoul dstill get another start before season's end.
This just in...Mark Buehrle sucks!!! Well, that was in earlier this season, but I felt the need to re-iterate.
And finally, congrats to Barry Bonds who hit his 734th home run tonight. The homer breaks Hank Aaron's NL record and puts Bonds just 21 dingers shy of Aaron's MLB record of 755. Way to go juice head!!! I hope you get out of baseball as soon as you pass it next year. And for all you Bonds fans out there....again....you're only angry because you know I'm right.

Some late games on the West Coast still going...if any relevant news breaks, I'll be back with it in the morning while I prep for football.

Catch you next time....
