What's the Buzz? 3/10/06

So I'm just going to start it off now as I'll be out for the night and won't be able to recap until well after midnight.

I guess we'll begin with the not so surprising Team USA crushing of South Africa this afternoon in the WBC. Looks like I have to endure another round of watching Johnny Damon and Chase Utley risk their well being for a useless tournament. South Africa was, fortunately, put out of its misery after 5 innings as the U.S. pounded them for 17 runs. Ken Griffey, Jr. led the way going 4-4 with a pair of 3 run bombs and totaled 7 RBI for the afternoon. Look for him in the later rounds of your drafts as he should still find a way to contribute. Last year he looked great up until the last month, so be cautious, but definitely keep him in mind. [someone remind me later....i have some more mixed feelings that tie in with Griffey and the WBC] Derek Lee added a home run of his own as the team cranked out a total of 18 hits. Not everyone got into the action as my boy Johnny went 0-3 and Michael Barrett went 0-4. I wouldn't worry, though. Everyone who played today for the U.S. will be a solid pickup on draft day.
In an even more useless game, the Netherlands pounded Panama in another "mercy rule" shortened game. This time it ended after 7 innings with the score 10-0. But the big story here was that Giants' prospect Shairon Martis tossed a no-hitter through 7 when the game was called. Unfortunately that's about as exciting as it gets as he doesn't look to make the Giants' rotation or even a spot in the bullpen this year.

In the real Spring Training......

The Devil Rays are happy with prospect Edwin Jackson, whom they acquired from the Dodgers in the Danys Baez trade, as he looked very good today. Tread lightly though...while he may very well be in the Rays' rotation this season, we've been waiting for him to perform for almost 2 years now.
The Indians locked in Jhonny Perralta, signing him to a 5 year, $13 million deal. Apparently it's a great deal and a great price for the Indians, but seeing as how Jhonny has only done well for one season, we'll wait and see.
Mets OF Cliff Floyd saw action today and went 1-3. He apparently can still play despite showing signs of renal failure, which runs in his family. Monitor this all spring if you happen to be a fan and were thinking of drafting him.

That's all I have for you right now, but check back later for more WBC and Spring Training info.

Catch you next time...
